Changing Reservation from Cash to Points

I'm holding a cash reservation at a WDW resort and may want to change it to use some points that may expire before my next trip. (My schedule's changed and now I realize some points may expire unless I use them.) Has anyone ever had the reservation changed vs cancelling and rebooking? If so can this be done at the last minute (within a few days of arriving)? I appreciate any advise!

First of all, I am assuming your cash reservation is for a non-DVC resort. You will have to cancel that reservation and then rebook it through MS to pay for the room with points. Keep in mind the cancellation policy for your cash reservation. My understanding is that the deadline for cancelling without penalty (i.e., to ensure the return of your deposit) varies depending on how it was originally booked (via CRO, WDWTC, online, etc.).

Once you use the points for a non-DVC option, those points can only be used for a non-DVC option. Specifics vary depending on the non-DVC option chosen.

As long as the non-DVC resort has availability, you can book a room there on points. There are a few exceptions to that. For example, not all room types are available for points at all resorts and I don't think you can book same day reservations on points (but not sure on that). Best to call MS to see exactly how the "rules" will apply to your situation.
