Changing number of guests in room

My friend has a reservation at ASSp for 14nts for 2 people. Her friend on the reservation isn’t coming until day 7, but another friend (not on the reservation) will be there instead from day 1 to 9. I read that splitting the reservation between friend 1 and friend 2 should be able to be done at the desk. My question is because there is an overlap of two days with 3 guest, will the 3rd person charge apply to just those two days or the length of stay?

Yes, the extra person charge should only apply on the overlapping nights. But would it not be easier and more reasonable (and less likely to cause issues of delays) to change the reservation to the person arriving your same date, then adding the the other person sometime before they arrive?
