Changing flights booked with Delta miles

We have flights booked next Thursday with Delta. On June 20th I received an email from Delta changing our return flight. Our previous arrival time was 9:10 pm and we are now arriving at 10:03. With Delta making this change, would they allow us to move to an earlier flight in the day or even change to the day before without a penalty?

Circumstances have changed (post hospitalization/surgery) where we don't know if we can even take the trip. If we could move the return flight up even a day it might make it more likely that we can go. No trip insurance, unfortunately.

That might be enough of a difference for them to change it. If the person that has the miles has status with delta they should check what they can do; some statuses might allow for no-fee changes anyway.

All you can do is check. I know some policies state it must be more than a 3 hour change made by the airline to change without fee

And earlier flight is definitely possible a different day is highly unlikely

Typically Delta will work with you if the change in flight times is greater than an hour. Your change is very close and I'd think they will do what they can to get you on the earlier flight without penalty. However, they won't move you to the previous day without penalty.

After an incredibly long telephone conversation (1 hour 32 minutes), we are now arriving home at 7:30 pm instead of 10:00 pm. I don't know if it was worth all that much trouble, but it helps a little.

Now we wait for Monday for the doctor to hopefully give final permission for travel! Thanks for the advice! I do appreciate Delta helping me make this change, but totally ridiculous for it to take so long.
