I'm sure this has been asked many times before but I can't find the search function, so here's my question:

I booked a stay on our points for a Sunday through Thursday this October using borrowed points. Didn't have enough points for Saturday and Sunday, and can't borrow anymore points, so booked cash nights for those. Even with the discount it was a bit more than what we wanted to pay. In talking to a good friend who is also a DVC member, they indicated they would be happy to transfer enough points into my account so we can change those cash nights into points.

My question, how do we do this? I don't want to lose those two nights in making the change. I wanted to be armed with the correct information before I call Member Services as you guys often know more than they do.

Thanks!

Which resort and room size? If you are talking about BCV or BWV during that time of year in a studio or 2 bedroom, I'd say you might have a problem finding anything available. I'd arrange a conference call with your friend and check on availability before you decide to do the transfer and booking.

I suspect you will be fine since weekend nights are usually the last to be reserved. You can't just switch a cash reservation to points, but there shouldn't be a problem doing what you want.

Why not just have your friend reserve those nights using their points and then link the two reservations together (MS can do that for you easily) - that way you can have the weekend nights reserved using points before cancelling the cash reservations and there will be no problem messing with a transfer. Linking reservations - even when made from different accounts - is an easy way to accomplish what you want to do.

cash inventory and points inventory are completely separate, so you can't simply swap the reservation.

as diane said, you would need to be sure there was actual availability in the points inventory.

I agree this is the best way to go. I have linked reservations with friends for group trips and it was no problem. One time I booked nights 1, 3 & 4 and my friend booked night 2 (Friday), we linked them and everything was treated as 1 stay, got keys for all 4 nights.

Ah, just having them make the reservation with their points and then linking to ours does make sense. I didn't realize you could do that. And it is for AKL so I think we have a good shot at still having points availability.

I knew you guys would have the answer! Thank you so much!

I continue to learn things on this site every day. Thanks, everyone. I had no idea that MS could link reservations made by different members.
