Changes to Space Mountain?

I've looked around a little and haven't seen anything on this...on a Backstage Magic tour last week in the shops area, our guide was pointing out things from various attractions and she said here's the new Space Mountain car (it was actually from Rock n Roller Coaster). Then her eyes got big and she said that they are changing the attraction to be how it is in Disneyland, but you didn't hear that from me. Flimsy? Maybe. But it was probably the most interesting thing to come from the tour, haha.

The huge refurb at Disneyland took over 2 years. And I don't think they ever had the seating that they do at MK's.

I don't see them taking Space down at MK long enough to do what the guide was saying they'll do.

I seriously doubt they would make a change that major. One of the reasons the DL one is the way it is is because of the lack of space necessitating a smaller footprint and the similarity to Matterhorn (WDW Space Mountain uses the same ride system and similar dual-track system). Other than theme, the two rides are really nothing alike.

If they could make the seatbacks at WDW have the speakers for the awesome soundtrack that DL Space has, I'd be happy.

As it is now, after my ride on Tuesday, Space is going to be a skip for me going forward.

It would be nice if the cars were like the ones at DL.

But I agree that it is highly unlikely that this would happen if it would mean Space Mountain would be down for that length of time.

The whole point of the last major refurb was to redo all the ride track so that it could support the weight of rockets with on-board audio, and improve the effects inside the mountain. That plan got value-engineered into only replacing some track and installing wayside audio. (i.e. To save money.) If they didn't go all the way a few years ago as originally planned, I doubt they're going to address Space Mountain again for a long time.

The complete rebuild of Disneyland's Space Mountain happened because the original rockets with onboard audio (from the 1990s) were too heavy for the track to bear. The only solution was to gut the entire ride and rebuild the entire ride system from scratch, which is why it took two years. The only way Magic Kingdom could get onride audio for Space Mountain is if a similar closure happened and rebuild, and TDO just doesn't choose to send attractions into refurbs of that length.
