Changes to my PM's - how and why?

Serious question here, if that is the case...why is a certain word that caused the recent banning of a long-term regular poster not being filtered?

I would really tend to think that a single use of one word is a 'tilting point' for geting banned. While some new posters prolly get banned pretty quickly a long time poster generally needs to have some sorta history before getting banned. I think normally the webmasters try to be on the nicer side but they can't always do that. :( (and no, I don't want to be a webmaster. Blech.)

So basically what you're saying is everything is censored here - including basic info that DISer's share via PM's?

Yes. while Private Messages are not public to be read by everyone, neither are they 100% private. The webmasters and moderators have the ability to read everything you write on the DIS, including PMs.

Inappropriate sometimes depends on context.

So, as long as we use "that word" in the right context, even if we use it 100 times a day, that's ok from now on?

Well I can't really see where my questions have been answered - and there doesn't appear to be any "list" of what can and can't be posted (either on the boards or via PM's) - so I guess we'll all just have to wing it and hope for the best.. Obviously since the PM was sent to me - not written by me - I had no idea why anything was being filtered out.. Actually, I still don't have any idea why the words in question were filtered out.. :confused3

Can anybody set this thread to music? Preferably the theme from "The Twilight Zone"? Dan - where are you?? :teeth:

Well, if someone sent me a nasty pm, I would want them to be able to read it and deal with the culprit. I don't pm much that I wouldn't or couldn't say on the DIS. Although, I can think of a few that would probably have gotten me in trouble.

Actually, moderators and webmasters can't read your PMs. I can't imagine why anyone would want to or where they'd find the time, even if it were possible.

Anyone care to clue me in on what this word is? I don't wanna get in trouble.

As long as you're not posting profanity, off-color jokes or sexual innuendo, advertising, harassing or arguing with other posters (or moderators) or generally trying to disrupt the boards, you're okay.

shhh... the bad word is 'Universal'. You didn't hear it from me!

(WebmasterKathy won't tell either. You can PM her begging all you want, and she just sends smileys.... )

I'm so clueless around here. But I've found some help this time.

And don't be sending me any PM's that has any of that junk - or actually, anything else for that matter - because it's just gonna disappear and then keep me awake all night wondering what it was... :rotfl:

If someone sent me a nasty PM and it upset me I would report it. If it didn't upset me, I would let it be. I also don't PM much that I wouldn't in "regular" DIS conversation. But sometimes ... I like to PM a poster "off-line" that would honk off another poster and cause a row that I would rather avoid. I certainly don't post any rude or bone-headed words in my PMs that would upset anyone. Unlike some of the PMs I have received! LOL!

I see your point, Robin. You could just report the offensive posts, but we shouldn't let this become a bone of contention- back to the original subject.

Well now this is interesting.. About 2 and a half weeks ago I received a PM with some info in it.. I just went back to look at it this evening and the info has been changed!

Who did it - and why? I "thought" that PM's were private here.. Is there a mod or a webmaster out there who would like to explain just what the policy is on PM's and who has access to them?

I love the DIS, but it's getting mighty strange around here.. :confused3
Happened to me too. There was a word in there (It was a link) and after the word was sent to me (not a bad word at all) they banned it. To keep people from linking to there from here.

Not true. People with access to the core database can read your PMs fairly easily. They shouldn't, but they can.
