Change marathon registration to 1/2?

I am supposed to run my first marathon at WDW next January. I was super excited about this, but a few weeks ago, I tore my medial meniscus :sad2: The doc said I should get surgery, but I opted to try to heal naturally through physical therapy first. I have been going to physical therapy for 3 weeks, and I am only getting worse. I cannot do any of the exercises, cannot walk or swim, even icing it hurts. I am seeing my doc tomorrow and I will probably have the surgery.

I want to fully recover and take my time before I get back into running. This means I do not want to push my training. I am already registered for the full marathon, but I think it would be better if I ran the 1/2. Does anyone know if I can change my registration?

Thanks for your help :)

We had a similar situation for the 2004 race. DH was registered for the full. In June of 2003, he was diagnosed with cancer. He had surgery immediately and radiation for the month of August. Then in October, he had a hernia repair surgery. So, needless to say, his training went out the window!

He contacted someone at the Sports Dept. at WDW. Basically, they told him even though he was registered for the full, just run the half. They couldn't guarantee a medal, but said it was ok for him to do that. So, that's exactly what he did.

Now that the races are on separate days, I'm not sure you could do this. I'd give someone at Sports a call. I am thinking you might just have to also register for the half since they are different days now, but that's just a guess.

Good luck with your surgery & recovery! :grouphug:

Thanks so much for the info Kristi :) I will call WDW Sports and see if I can change my race!

Here is the response that I got last year when I inquired about changing from the 1/2 to the full marathon:

We are allowing transfers from the half marathon to full marathon up until September 1, 2005. The only fee associated with this transfer is the $10 difference in the registration fee from the half marathon to the full marathon. We will need something in writing mailed to us stating your request to transfer along with the $10 check. After September 1, 2005, no more transfers between the races will be allowed.

Please mail the letter and check to Walt Disney World Marathon, PO Box 536547, Orlando, FL 32853-6547.

Thanks,

Steve Lapierre
Registration Manager

I recommend that you contact WDW sports and confirm that the rules are the same this year, but you should be able to change your registration without a problem. Good luck!
