Wife and I are still in the process of research (have another post nearby), my next question is.. I see all over this board how people have several home bases, and they have added on points. Is it a far gone conclusion that we will add points as well? We are looking into 150pts at SSR and we have a family of 4 with no chance of having any more (wife has been neutered).

I have seen some with several 100 if not 1000s of points on this board, what are the chances that we will end up with more?

Needing more points is always a personal decision. Just keep in mind that with every point you buy comes the annual dues associated with that point (i.e $4.12/pt at SSR, $4.40/pt at OKV, etc.) We too are buying just 150 points at SSR. We're going to see how that works for us for a few years and then if, and only if, the balance on the first purchase is paid in full and we think we need more then we'll probably jump on the TTS website and try to grab a 50 or 100 point contract when it comes along.

Hope to see you around SSR sometime. :)

My guess is that you WILL add on points, since you have a large enough family that a 2 bedroom is definitely in your future. We started with 230 points and found it not to be enough, so we added on 150 more. Those 380 served us well over the past 10 years, but now we want some other options with AKV, so we added ona few there for home resort advantage at that resort. Our first two contracts were both at OKW so we had access to all points at the 11 month window. Now we have other options.

Another influence in whether "addonitis" strikes is the location of future DVCs. My DH and I weren't sure about adding another home resort, but when AKV was announced, it was irresistable to us.
There are many on these boards who will be doing the same if, and when, CRV is built.:thumbsup2 Sometimes, the heartstrings are tugged too strongly to resist  (also, the extra contract years can be a factor :thumbsup2 ).

Well if we follow through with our first purchase, we will try to pay it off asap, and then see how we like the 150 first, then we may add another 50 or so if we think we'll need to.

If you get hooked, can you get addicted to DVC points???

Yep. It is possible

Besides, life is what happens after you make plans. You never know but chances are you will want to go more frequently and/or stay longer.

MG- We are sending in the deposit for 150 via TTS tomorrow morning! :goodvibes

I started at 160 in 2005 and within two years was at 310. I am in the process of selling my original contract and buying 3 50 point contracts. I own at 4 resorts.

I am truly insane.

How many points you own is a function of when you want to travel, where and what size unit you need.

150 points at SSR gets you 4-6 days in a 1 bedroom, 6-12 days in a studio, and 3-5 in a 2 bedroom. (The fewest days during Easter and Christmas, the middling days during much of the year and the most days during Adventure season: Sept, early Dec & January.)

I think most of us have added on because we either want longer stays or larger accommodations. We started with 200 pts, then added on another 120 because we wanted to get 10-15 days a year and be able to mix it up with studio, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom stays. The advantage of having an in-room washer/dryer is one reason we look for that 1 bedroom. Studios are for short stays when we don't expect to have time for laundry (2-3 nights). And 2bedrooms are for when we take family.

It doesn't hurt to start small and get used to the system. Then when you add on you may find a newer resort wheere you can spred your points around. Then you can use your home resort points in an every other year stategy and get the full amount for a long, big vacation every year. (150 + 150 = 300). Or else do small 50 point add-ons and give yourself 2-3 add-on stays at other resorts to extend your trip.

Thanks for all the info, we haven't even closed on this deal and my wife is talking about adding.

We'll see how this all plays out.

I worked up the folowing points estimates for my wife so I could get her "off the fence". Let me know if they seem fairly accurate. The calculations are based on the "slow seasons":

Adventure Season
Jan 1- 31
Sept 1-30
Dec 1-14

Choice Season
Oct 1-31
Nov 1-21
Nov 25-30
Dec 15-23

- The studio at Saratoga Springs Resort (SSR) goes for 11 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 13 days out of 150 points in a studio (sleeps 4).

-The studio at the Old Key West Resort (OKW) goes for 8 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 18 days out of 150 points in a studio.

- The studio at the Beach Club Villas (BCV) goes for 12 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 12 days out of 150 points in a studio.

- The studio at the Boardwalk Villas (BWV) goes for 12 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 12 days out of 150 points in a studio.

- The studio at the Villas in the Wilderness Lodge (VWL) goes for 12 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 12 days out of 150 points in a studio.

- The studio at the Hilton Head Island Resort (HHI) goes for 8 - 12 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 12 - 15 days out of 150 points in a studio.

- The studio at the Vero Beach Disney Resort (VBR) goes for 10 points per night Sun - Thur during the seasons listed above. We could technically get 15 days out of 150 points in a studio.

No, it isn't a foregone conclusion. People who hang on this board tend to be a little Disney nuts.

We have 150 - we stay in a two bedroom every other year with points to spare. Or we save points and stay in a one bedroom (family of four with kids little enough to stay on the sofabed).

Our biggest temptation is adding points to treat guests. With the kids little we've been able to put them on the sofabed and have an extra bedroom - but the kids won't go for that for much longer.

Our smallest temptation has been to add more trips. We weren't Disney annuals before, and became Disney bi-annuals when we bought DVC. Honestly, every other year is getting to be a bit much - possibly a few more years of this. But my sister and her family can use the points.

So you are getting to the point to where you are getting tired of the magic, Crisi?

I laughed when I read this. I have 2 friend who belong to DVC and both love being members. One of the couples I would describe as Disney-crazy. I know that the husband and wife would be happy to go to Disney at least once per year if not more the rest of their lives w/ or w/o kids. And they have 150 pts and have never added on. They are going at least 3 times this year (at least once they will be staying off property). Sure they always get a studio and might stay at OKW some years to stretch out their points...but I'll take it from them that an "add-on" is not always necessary. :)

No, its a good easy vacation for us - we know it - and the whole family enjoys the trips. But our kids are now seven and eight - old enough to take other places. There is so much of the world I want to show them - and we don't have all the vacation time (or the money) I'd like to do it all. A trip to WDW for us is a trip we aren't taking somewhere else.

We have made promises to ourselves to get the kids to both Europe and Asia before they leave high school. My son is Korean, so getting to Korea is high on our list.
