We have a reservation at California Grill at 9:40 pm in 2.5 weeks. What time would you recommend we leave MK to arrive in time to check in and get up to the top floor?

You can walk from the MK gate to the Contemporary and then get up to the CG check-in place in about 15 minutes. So, anytime up to about 9:20 or so and you should be just fine.

Checking in for the California Grill does not happen inside the restaurant. You check-in on the 2nd floor of the Tower and from there you take a special elevator up to the restaurant.

While it is true that you will be seated if you are there by 9:20, I suggest arriving at least 45 minutes early. We had reservations at 9:40 on 4/4 and arrived 45 mins early. We sat at the bar and were buzzed to be seated at 9:10. Since this was a birthday dinner for my bf (and his first DW visit) I asked if we had a window seat. No dice but it was offered that we could wait to see if one became available. We sat back at the bar, ordered another drink and enjoyed nice conversation and the atmosphere. 20 mins later we were buzzed again and sat with a perfect window view of the castle. Our appetizers and drinks came right as the lights dimmed for the fireworks. It was truly a magical evening pixiedust:

Since CG is a Signature Restaurant with a dress code many change vs going directly from a park. Have you planned to do this? We went to Narcoossee's last summer from our resort, so we didn't have your dilemma. The dress code doesn't allow for tanks, swimwear, but by no means require you to be "dressed up" golf shirts, casual slacks/shorts/dresses etc. are fine.

Yes, we will be dressed up in the park since we're only going for a few hours. I will be wearing flat sandals and a sundress and DH will be in khaki shorts and a polo shirt. We're only at WDW for a 2.5 day weekend so we've got to make the most of the time in the parks!

Good for you. I think PPs have given you good advice for getting to CR, enjoy!
