Cell phones or Walkie Talkies???

One of the reasons we switched to nat. plan a few years ago was the ability to use on vacation to call older kids/mom @ home.

Must admit I absolutely hate walkie-talkies: static, inability to consistently contact each other, etc.

Two biggest gripes:
1) the people standing a foot away from you on-line for an attraction, screaming into the walkie talkie in a futile attempt to make themselves heard (yes, I can hear you - my ears are still ringing!)

2) parents who hand them over to their irresponsible kids (the blue talk @ times will burn your ears).

We have some high-end walkies which we have used in the past. They were okay, but I found out something interesting at the MK...

During the parades the MK somehow manages to "take over" the radio waves in the park. I was on the walkie when the parade started, and suddenly every channel went dead. As soon as the parade had ended, the walkie came squaking back to life! They probably used radios to navigate and manage the parade route, and interference could be a serious hazard.

Now that my DH and I have the same calling plan, we'll be using our cells. Especially when you consider how much smaller and lighter the phones are, those walkies seem so cumbersome!

I have a question for anyone who has used their walkie-talkies at WDW. Did you find you were constantly having to listen to your handset to see if the voice you were hearing was looking for you? I fear that I will be constantly pulling this thing off my belt because it sqwalked only to find out it is another group talking. At least when a cell phone rings you know it is for you.

I am from Canada and my cell phone will not work in the US and can't be upgraded.
