Cell phones in the Bahamas?

Can you use US cell phones in the Bahamas? I have a relative in poor physical condition and I want to stay in touch while we are on our 4-day cruise. Anyone tried calling from Nassau, Freeport, or Castaway Cay?

I'll try Verizon tomorrow but I thought I would run it by the people who have been there, too.

Regular cell phones do not work . You can rent a SAT phone for
your trip. They work great I use UniverCell at rentalcell.com

We just returned this past Thursday from the 4 day and used our Verizon cell phone standing on the pier in Nassau. The connection was clear, the only problem was wondering how much an 8 minute cell phone call would cost!!! (we were calling NY)

I was in Nassau October 2001 and both my husband and my cell phones worked to call home (Chicago area)

Our Nextel did not work or did our Cingular service.....
we had to find another phone to call home...
