Cell phone info/help

We switched to AT&T last fall to have better reception at home; I was seriously considering an iPhone but spent months researching.

One thing I learned through folks at work is that the iPhone does not have a replaceable battery. In theory you can send it back to them and they will rip it apart for over $200 and put a new battery in, but they seldom work right after that. How many of us have had a cell phone battery last the full two years on a typical contract if you go for the reduced priced phone?

I went with a Nokia E71x because it got good reviews on CNET, was supposed to have a good battery life and was FREE. Well, the phone never really lasts that long if I use it (could be a bad battery), and the display is pretty weak for web-browsing. It also does not work well for listening to podcasts (I download the DISunplugged for my commute a lot). So I picked up an Itouch for the music and web browsing when I am in an area with wifi.

Something else to consider, the safari browser on the iTouch and iPhone do not support Flash player. Youtube will work, but I like to catch the local news and weather sometimes and they will not play on the iTouch. I also can not get to my webmail on Comcast.net via the iTouch.

Facebook on my Nokia works OK, and I did post fairly frequently from our trip to DC in April.

I've had at least five phones, all on two year contracts, mostly the free phones, and I've never had to replace a battery. We replaced a battery in DH's phone once but that was only after he kept dropping it so I think it was his fault.

The Apple/Jobs -vs- Flash thing is ridiculous and one of the reasons why I won't be getting an iPad anytime soon.

I use CNet for research too and they are the best website, usually the most accurate. I love the way they test how the reviews are laid out.

Well for me I didnt like the Droid phone. I switched from Sprint Blackberry Curve to a Cellular South HTC Hero. I loved the apps but hated the keyboard. It was also quirky switching from up to sideways. I have an Ipod and like it much better. As of right now Im back to trying a newer Blackberry Curve with the touch mouse. It is way better that the trac ball one. As far as plans go Verizon robs people with their data charges. I only pay $70.00 for unlimited anything (talk, text & web) except picture texting. But you can BB msg them or email so its not an issue.

I just got the LG Chocolate Touch. Its a good looking phone with a clear picture and decent sound quality. I'm still trying to figure out everything it does; the manual that came with it doesn't have much detail.

BTW, Has anyone ever used the Disney application that tells you what the wait time is while you're in the park?

Have I said that I HATE my Blackberry Curve? My biggest issues are: Sprint's service in our area sucks (not the BB's fault). The keyboard is too difficult to use - the buttons are too small, you have to hit multiple buttons for upper/lower case, you have to hit multiple buttons for punctuation, numbers, etc. The call log app stinks. I've had the roller ball mouse replaced twice. The phone never stays in Sync with my Sync. (Lincoln dealer told me that was a problem with BB). It's too clumsy and uncomfortable for long conversations. Because the keyboard is unprotected (doesn't close), I constantly hear "beeps" because the keyboard is getting bumped in my purse - through a case. It's just a big P.I.T.A. Half the time the internet never boots up because Sprint's service sucks in our area. I was told even though 4G will work on the BB, the only area that Sprint has 4G service is in Atlanta. My next phone is most likely going to be the Samsung Droid - unless something cooler comes out in the next 10 months.

In some cases, I like the latest things. But phones - not so much. I hate phones. I get a cell phone because I have to, and it's the cheapest one I can get. Then I use it until it dies. I've had the same phone for 3 years now and it's still going strong, so I keep it. I use a phone to talk with, a camera to take photos, and a computer for the internet. When I go camping, the phone is for emergencies and I'm glad to be away from the computer for a few days.

Really, you have to decide what is the most important feature for you. To me, I want to be able to tweet pictures and post pictures to Facebook, so the camera was really important to me. I only need a little internet time so I looked at anything at Verizon that only needed the $10 package. After lots of research and testing for myself at our big Verizon store, I picked the LG Touch. It only has a 3.2 megapixal camera, but the picture is really clear because it has a Schneider lens.

CNet has good reviews, including camera info.
