We have a really old Verizon Wireless plan and no desire to change it. We will be on roaming at WDW. My daughter says it will be cheaper to text us using their Trac Phones. Is this true?

Possibly. You would need to call VZW to find out what your text rate is ala-carte. I'd guess it's probably .10 out and .02 in, but you may be on different rates. Of course, if your plan is that old and your phone matches it's age, you may very well not have the capability to text from your phone in the first place.

And sometimes with the newer plans, you can actually save money. Never hurts to make a phone call or visit a store, if there is one close by.

Can you change your plan, just for that month? I know when I occasionally(1-2 times a year) go out of our service area, I call and change to the national plan for a month. Mine is actually the same price, just less minutes. Just had to remember to call and switch it back.

It may not only be cheaper to text, it may actually be better.

1. You can usually text even where there is not enough signal to carry on a good voice conversation.

2. It is far less intrusive to read or write a message in a attraction than to carry on a conversation. In addition, you can always choose to wait to read a message until after the ride/attraction.

3. You can usually set different alerts for calls/text. This way you will know by the type of alert whether you need to check the phone now, or can wait till later.

And one last benefit - I still have messages stored in my phone from previous trips. Sometimes it's nice to read them again just to stir the memories :goodvibes

Thank you all for your advice!! As for swithching plans the one we have now usually works out great for us and we have never gone over our minutes. It is a plan that is no longer offered so we don't want to mess with it. Our phones are newer and capable of text so it sounds like this is what we will be doing. That is a great point about text being less annoying than trying to yell in a line.

I obviously have no idea what you're paying per month and what you're getting with it, but... Just because it's not offered any longer doesn't mean it's the best thing for you. Way back when I was paying $59.99 for 200 anytime and 1000 night and weekend. That isn't offered anymore and I'm certainly glad I changed my plan ;)

Chances are, for the same amount of money you're paying now you can get more minutes. Even if you don't use them, you're getting something for nothing, so take advantage of it :)

Of course, all of that being said there are certainly times where it's best to keep what you have.

Just a thought.

I for one am a nextel customer
I love my direct connect (walkie talkie) which is free, we use that when in disney.
and nextel never charges any roaming fees when I am traveling like other companies do.
you just cant beat the prices and the service they give.
