Ceiling fans - yay or nay?

I need to replace the ceiling fan in my kitchen. It must be 30 years old and 2 of the 4 light sockets need to be replaced. I'd like to replace the whole fixture but can't decide on another ceiling fan or just a ceiling light. It is the only light fixture in the room, well except for the small flourescent above the sink.

We had a ceiling fan in our eat-in-kitchen area, and took it out and added drop lights instead...looks much nicer IMO.

Now if you have a really high/vaulted ceiling, I'd say keep/replace the fan to help with air circulation.

I know that they're technically not in vouge, however - they have some really 'nicer' looking ones now, and I can't ever see losing that wonderful circulation they give you.

I say, get a snazzy one.

Depends on the ceiling height. We only have 9 foot ceilings in our kitchen, so no fan (even in a HUGE kitchen). We didn't want dust blowing around in there. With a vaulted ceiling, we would have one. They really cut back on energy costs during summer months...

I say 'yay', but we have a 100 year old house, with 9 foot ceilings, and no central air. We have ceiling fans in all bedrooms, kitchen and dining room.

Wow, I didn't know they weren't in style. I love my ceiling fans. Hoping to put one in our bedroom.

The last house we lived in didn't even need A/C in the summer because the ceiling fans did such a great job.

I love ceiling fans, especially in bedrooms. Unfortunately the only room in this house that has one is the kitchen and I don't love it in the kitchen. I feel like it is always blowing papers and things around.

We have high vaulted ceilings and there is no way I would get rid of ours. I second the snazzy new ceiling fan!

We have them in just about every room. And just replaced all of them with more updated looking fixtures and QUIETER Hunter fixtures.

We don't live in an area that uses A/C maybe 5 days per year, but we use our ceiling fans quite a lot! Could not live without them.

Our kitchen does not have one. Its a galley kitchen & too narrow. Its also the hottest part of the house. If I could have one, I sure would!

I had to order mine online, and there were on back-order from Hunter in December! It doesn't seem they are out of style. lol

DW watches one of those cable "fix up your house" shows and one of the first things they do is come in & rip out the ceiling fans. When we moved to our current place a few years ago DW wanted to removed the ceiling fan from the vaulted ceiling in the living room. I suggested that before we remove it we stay here for a summer or two and determine if it might be helpful to keep cool. We don't discuss removing the ceiling fan anymore.

Well that's good to know - we just spent hundreds of dollars putting ceiling fans in every room of our new house!

Here in Florida I think almost everyone has them. We use the one in our bedroom pretty much every night, and we even have one outdoors in the covered patio area.

I like my ceiling fans. I have one in my kitchen, one in the TV room & one in my bedroom. I love the way they move the air around on a nice day, or when I want to air out the house. A regular fixture can be bought for $30 so if I ever have to move I can just replace what I have. No way I'd live my life giving up temporary comforts in anticipation of maybe having to possibly move one day.

I would rather pay to run a ceiling fan than pay to run the A/C.
1980s ceiling fans look dated, but its very easy to change the glass shades & turn over the wicker blades or buy new ones. We did both of those things to our fans when we were going to sell. Big difference. But then we ended up staying. The fans just became so loud, rattley, and whobbley that we replaced them.

Since that HGTV show where the families redecorate rooms for each other was telling everyone they were out of style.

I wouldn't want a ceiling fan in a kitchen but we have them elsewhere. If you can put one in a family room or something near your kitchen I would do that. We have them in the bedrooms and our family room. I don't care if they are not 'stylish' they are functional and that is more important.

If you are staying in your home for a while, do what you want. Otherwise, succumb to public opinion for the sale. We just moved into a home with no ceiling fans and we're installing them. I think they keep the rooms cooler without having to turn on A/C and distribute the heat thus saving money there as well. Up to you!

You can buy some very quiet, small and powerful fans that have no fashion statement-clean lines-these days.

Ceiling fan styles make a big difference.

For me, I wouldn't put one in my kitchen. We had a ceiling fan in our family room (9 foot ceilings). Someone pointed out to me that the fan made the ceilings seem much shorter than 9 feet. I totally replaced the fan (for a more "ceiling hugger" style) and it makes a huge difference. I also got an updated color. Now if you look for it,you see an in style fan, but it is not the first thing you see when you walk into the room. Raise the fans if you can.

DH always wanted one in our bedroom but I didn't. When we were preparing for our nursery, I decided to get one in there for circulation and ended up putting one in our bedroom as well, without telling DH! Boy was he surprised! And as much as I say I didn't like them at one point, they really do make a difference and I am glad that we have them.
