So we found out today that our 6 year old is likely going to be getting a cecostomy this summer. Now, I know they're allowed to swim with one as long as you make sure to clean the area well, but I'm wondering if any of you have successfully done water parks with one?

I was just wondering about the risking it getting bumped or rubbed etc... On rides? Also, would it be safe to do Discovery Cove, or would there be increased risk of bacteria with the fish etc?

Also, how did you manage the flushes? I'm assuming you just planned certain evenings to be at the resort?

No personal experience, but I am a nurse.

To swim you will need to cover it with a tegaderm or some other from of bioclusive dressing. If she has the type with the pigtail you will need to coil it around the ostomy site and secure it down with the dressing.

If you are worried about the device becoming dislodged on slides I would recommend 2 things. 1) a one piece swimsuit and 2) a protective g-tube band.

The band is like a belt that fits around your child and has a wider, round area that covers the ostomy site. Google "protective g-tube band."

As far as flushes, hopefully by the time you are on your strip you will have her flush amount titrated and the flush shouldn't take more than an hour. No need, really, to cut your day short.

Is Tegaderm that clear tape? I think we used to use it on her NG tube to keep it in place.
