CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

This goes along with the discussion of everyone should be able to get a vaccine by April if they want. In my city the state has created a mass vaccination center in the city. For the past week only city residents in underserved zip codes have been allowed to make an appointment. According to the news story today there are 17,000 unfilled appointments some of them for tomorrow. In my opinion the city did a terrible job in getting out into the community to have the appointments filled. They are now saying that they need another week. Here is the deal I have friends who are ready and willing to take those spots. They are teachers who are currently have an appointment but have to drive 4 hours. They are people above age 65 who have not had luck with getting appointments locally. The city knew this was coming for the past 3 week and did a terrible job to promote getting the vaccine and then did not go out in the community to get people signed up. My point is there are vaccine appointments that may go unfilled due to this and yes there are people who would sign up but do not live the designated zip codes.

That's some classic bureaucracy at work there. The fact remains, by April we will have more vaccines then people willing to take them. UNLESS....the messaging completely changes.

Again I think that there will still be places and people who want vaccines but will not be able to get them before June or July. The governor of NY announced that we are getting 168,000 doses of J&J this week but has not said where those doses are going. The mass vaccination clinics are using Pfizer so I don't know who will be getting those. My 23 year old son who lives in PA is trying to figure out when he might even be eligible so I am not sure about April. It is only 4 weeks until April and I know people who have appointments for their first shots in mid April so I am hopeful that I will be able to have my kids(all over the age of 18) vaccinated by August before they head off to school.

I get why you think that based on your anecdotal experience. But let me show you something. vaccine.png

That's 130m fully vaxxed people by the end of March. That's 50% of the eligible population. If Mod and Pfizer keep the same pace, not even an increase. That's 120m more doses in April. Then add in whatever JnJ can deliver, let's be conservative and say another 40m doses. That's 210 million vaccinated people by the end of April. We are going to have a demand problem at that point.

Well that's sorta a loaded thing here. On the one hand yes rural areas often lack big hospitals and healthcare may not be the best of the best so you're not incorrect there. On the other hand health care workers were prioritized first (along with those in long-term care facilities) in much of the U.S. and often there are more health care workers in the more populated areas where there's been less vaccine sent in various states which the article did touch on.

Additionally urban and inner cities often have more minorities who have been disproportionately affected by COVID and not only that often do not have access to quality healthcare either. But to this point more states are trying to at least target more vulnerable populations. They needed to do this too when it came to COVID testing and health safety precautions at least they did in my area.

The article touches on some of the issues one of which being resistance in rural parts..that was something I've been saying for a while. Rural areas may be less likely to be willing to get a vaccine and are often less willing to comply with COVID restrictions or guidance so it's good there to get vaccines but the issue has been too much unequal access.
A quick update. Saw a news story last night that Missouri is going to redeploy some mass vaccine resources to KC and St. Louis. It's crazy that it took this long. Of course, at the same time, I'm seeing stories about vaccine going unused now at some of the rural events. It's about time.

Fact check: TRUE.

Ya, local news reporting us in the big City suburbs are getting short cheated in number of doses compared to what other towns are getting across the state. And my state is still saying only elderly and essential workers. I guess I and my adult kids will be not getting availability until maybe the Fall or even later.

I think a lot of the problems with the vaccine roll out are failures of messaging. Public health infrastructure just isn't set up for good public relations or community outreach, and it shows. I think the idea of focusing on underserved populations is a good one in principle, but not if the implementation is just a restriction on who can make appointments without any awareness campaign to ensure those in the targeted zip codes know about the program and a realistic means of sign up. The latter is a big issue with the age-based implementation too. My mom's county is, fortunately, making appointments by phone as well as internet, but so many organizations are relying on social media to announce new clinics and available slots and conducting sign-ups solely or primarily online without thinking about the computer habits of the populations they're trying to reach (right now, 65+ and certain essential workers). Unless they have children or grandchildren helping them with the process, many of them are missing out because the message is being sent on a channel they just don't use.

Here in Ohio, eligibility is opening up to more groups starting Thursday...including those who are 60+, pregnant women, childcare workers, etc. Surprising to me since we had so much trouble getting appointments for my in-laws who are in the 65+ group, but we are also due to get our largest shipment of vaccines coming up. I just looked on Walgreens and saw lots of availability, more on CVS.com, etc.

Merck is partnering with J&J to help produce the J&J vaccine. Biden will officially announce the partnership today. That is excellent news as J&J is already behind in production. Also, the J&J vaccine will help the rural communities b/c it does not need special refrigeration. I don't live in a rural area per se, I live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and only the local grocery store pharmacy is administering vaccines right now. My doctor's office has stated they don't have the refrigerator required to store the current vaccines, so they are looking forward to the J&J version.

Based on the ramped up production of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and the addition of the J&J vaccine, the prediction is 100,000,000 vaccinations by the end of THIS month, March. That is a huge up tick as to date 25.4 million have been fully vaccinated and 50.7 million having received one shot. I heard one official say in an interview yesterday that he is "bullish" that things will be getting back to normal in May.

The two big issues now will be (1) the supply chain and (2) vaccine aversion. Hopefully, Biden can keep the materials needed to produce the vaccines coming. As for the second, they need to start an aggressive PSA campaign to educate people on the vaccine, the testing it went through, and its safety. There is still 1/3rd of Americans that are opposed to getting the vaccine. That is 1 out of every 3 people. That needs to change.

My wife's clinic just found out last night they have a bunch of doses coming today that they didn't even ask for.

Not shocking at all. We have a hundred years of evidence that viruses aren’t stopped by masks. That didn’t stop being true a year ago. Regardless of how our leaders have tried to lay the blame for a highly contagious airborne respiratory virus at our feet.

The more you know, and all that...

So true!!! The N95s and surgical masks are better at stopping most from penetrating as long as they are tight fitting but again taking them on and off you can infect yourself. And the cloth masks are not good at all. I really do have to laugh at how confident people are with masks when the evidence shows that they don't do much.

And very much agree that if someone is vaccinated that there is no reason not to start doing things that they were doing before. I do think some common sense needs to be used and still try to protect the vulnerable population but getting to see family (who is also taking appropriate precautions) is not unreasonable. We have not stopped seeing my mother for the last year as she would have never made it without contact from her family. I also believe in her right to choose. For her if she ended up dying that was worth it to her to be able to be with her family. I wouldn't have been happy with her dying but we made reasonable accommodations to make it as safe as possible for her.

So, it’s okay for a dentist or surgical team to not wear any mouth coverings? Maybe all those masks made by 3M is a hoax, playing on people’s fears. Obviously, since they don’t do much, right?

Not all masks are created equally or worn properly.

They are also not a magic shield. The right masks do help but they also have to be paired with the proper technique.

It doesn't take a genius to tell that there is still significant spread of COVID even with masking at 100%. Stop blaming it on people not masking as in most places that just isn't the case.

"All three vaccines were 100% effective at preventing severe disease six weeks after the first dose (for Moderna) or seven weeks after the first dose (for Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, the latter of which requires only one dose). Zero vaccinated people in any of the trials were hospitalized or died of COVID-19 after the vaccines had fully taken effect".
