CDC Director: Impending Doom

It is a bit difficult to know the context of the brief snippet from the CDC director posted by the OP. Was she replying to a speculative question and/or what other comments in total were being made? Words matter and public health officials need to choose their words carefully when trying to keep us informed. If she meant to say that covid is still a serious health threat globally and the focus needs to be on everyone getting the vaccine as well as continuing to follow recommended safety guidelines........she could have chosen better words to convey that message.

Some places are racing to reopen and in the past year one thing we have seen for sure is that optimistic rhetoric, being in denial or avoiding reality isn't a cure for covid. That is part of the situation public health officials have to deal with.

This being the case, I can't make heads or tails why they are just about forcing you to have it in order to cruise or travel etc. Shouldn't that be my decision being that it helps no one but me?

No. It doesn't help only you. People who get vaccinated aren't 100% protected against covid. So if people don't get vaccinated, it gives the virus opportunity to increase its ability to learn how to outsmart how our bodies fight it off. At that point, if it mutates enough, no vaccine or even luck will help many of us. It will make 500,000 dead look like nothing. And believe me, I don't really care if a person chooses to get it or not, that's everyones choice. But this takes a team effort ...I think that's what doctors and scientists(who actually understand this stuff -not some Facebook poster) are trying to stress. Could you die from the vaccine -yes. But the odds are really stacked against that. So, we choose whether we want to help the society we owe so much to ...or not. It's not an individual issue at all.

Things are lagging like crazy in Texas. They are behind others when it comes to vaccines even though pretty much everything is open now. I feel a bit uneasy about Texas but I wouldn’t say panicky.

Same problem in Continental Europe, even though they're now largely plunged back into full lockdowns following spikes in cases that include concerning variants including those that contain Kentish and South African mutations. The issue has been dogged by a lot of back-and-forthing over vaccine supplies and hesitance, especially after that panic over a couple of blood clot cases that led to the issuance of the AstraZeneca vaccine being suspended for around 48 hours. The UK in comparison is doing very well, and I hope things do improve in Texas and other parts of the US that are struggling with low vaccination rates.

I wish I could like this post many times.

People don't seem to understand that variants (mutations) crop up because of the sheer number of people this virus has been allowed to run through.
The original goal was to stop deaths, critical hospitalizations, the overtaxing of our healthcare workers. Next goal is to stop the spread - people want to harp on that never having been the intent - but now that the mutations are taking over, yes that should be the goal. We do not want or need this virus to begin to evade all the progress we've made thus far with vaccinations and therapeutics. I have no interest in being back in square one.

Covid is absolutely not an individual problem. As seen over and over again, a single individual can spread to dozens and dozens of people from a one-time meeting. I can't believe this has to be reinstated over a year into this. It is a PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS. It will rely on everyone doing their part to get over this, and we still can't even get some people to do the simplest things to help mitigate.

And this is why we will never ever be out of this. No one cares about their neighbors, just themselves.

Covid is mutating into variants to survive. What viruses do best. Plus those that had both Covid shots are now testing positive for Covid after 14+ days from the 2nd shot. The J&J vax was developed & tested with stem cells so that vax isn't going over well. Covid vax was not meant to be a cure. It was meant to just lessen the severity of Covid and ease hospitalizations overall.

I had the Johnson and Johnson shot - would you mind explaining what you mean by the bolded sentence?

The cells used to propagate the adenoviral vector in the J&J vaccine are morally objectionable to some because they are derived from the retinal tissue of an aborted fetus.
You can read more by googling PER C6 cells.

Thank you, I hadn't heard about that.

Well, every adenoviral vector-based vaccine is going to be based on a being, be it a simian, another animal or even a human foetus, since that's the nature of science. I'd take any vaccine as long as it's super-effective in preventing severe disease and reducing spread regardless, since I don't want this pandemic to prolong, and of course, I can have solace in the knowledge that the being sacrificed itself for the common weal of humankind.

All of the vaccines distributed in the USA are 100% effective against serious COVID/death.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are highly effective against catching it all (>95%).

The J&J vaccines was 72% effective in the USA. Remember still 100% effective against serious COVID/death.

Latest data indicates the vaccinated cannot transmit the virus (~90% probability).

All vaccines distributed in the USA are effective against the variants.

Our esteemed CDC director was "trying" to make a policy statement - but as usual bad messaging.

The crux of the (hidden) message: the anti-vax movement is still strong - very strong. If you spend time on other community boards, I'm sure you seen this. It amazes me that in a technologically advanced country we still have so many that will refuse the vaccine.

Get your vaccine - end the pandemic. By in large, most of the Disney folks here are stepping up big.

As for the human foetus objection, I personally see that as being no different to an organ donation. If I needed a transplant, I'd happy accept an organ from anybody regardless, so as long as the organ is suitable. If I accepted a vaccine that was derived from a human foetus, then likewise, I wouldn't mind. Again, it all boils down to the common weal of humankind and scientific progress. The objectors need to face up to the facts: if they continue to object, then we'd be stuck in this mess for a very very long time.

If Disney came out tomorrow and said you’d need proof of vaccination to enter the parks, I imagine 100% of the people here would get it.

It does seem incredible that a government official, someone who is supposed to be a leader, uses the phrase "impending doom" for anything.

Really?

Have you ever attended any of the leadership seminars that I have?

Is this how you show leadership?

Dr. Rochelle Walensky is scared.

Are you?

I am not. Every person over 65 that I know is vaccinated. Well, I know two eligible people that refused the vaccine. Oh well.

Every teacher that I know is vaccinated. I don't know any that have refused.

And, in fact, I am the opposite of scared. I have more hope now than in the last year.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/29/cdc...id-cases-rise-again-right-now-im-scared-.html

I'm fully vaccinated. DH is half vaccinated. Our kids' school is still doing full masking for all students, teachers, and staff. We still wear masks when we go out places, even if those places no longer require them.

The weather is warming up, which means that people can spend more time outside...in the sunlight and fresh air.

Like it or not, the vaccines DO work. They ARE working.

I'm not worried. Quite the opposite. I'm hopeful.

The CDC needs to put somebody in front of the cameras who's going to keep their cool and give the facts, NOT give emotionally-laden opinions with no facts to back them up. So that CDC doctor is afraid? Why? Why is she afraid? Is it because of the scientific data they're seeing? Or is it the opposite end of the spectrum...and she just needs a day off because she's worn out and burned out?

I mean...what are we supposed to do with a statement like "I'm scared" and "I have a sense of impending doom?" Maybe she needs a vacation. Or maybe she has solid reasons for being scared. Who knows?

When the vaccines available are 90% effective against the virus, without solid scientific reasons and explanations of why we should all be deathly afraid of 'impending doom,' what in the world are the rest of us regular Joe's supposed to do? Hibernate indoors, away from each other, forever? Or for another month? Or the rest of the year? What? Which is it?

That doctor needs to get a grip and the CDC needs to get a different spokesperson to go in front of the cameras.

It was definitely a poor word choice and of course that's what the media ran with. I bet she regrets saying it that way!
