We just got back from an amazing trip to DW. We were laying on a hammock one night and I got about 20 mosquito bites on my legs, and one bite that is very strange! It itched the same or a little more than a mosquito bite, but it puffed up with fluid or puss and got pretty big, about the size of a pencil eraser. It almost looks like a big wart! Does anyone know what this could be from? I have had it since Friday. The itching stopped after about 2-3 days, and now its just doing nothing but making me nervous!

Maybe you were stung by a fire ant. Some people are allergic to them. I was stung on our last trip, but it wasn't a big deal. We talked to a bus driver, however, who had been stung and had what looked like blisters from it.

My son has this type of reaction to spider bites. :( Once , while camping with the boyscouts, he was bitten and his entire leg swelled because it had become infected. That was scary!

I was the victim of a brown recluse spider last year (not at Disney, here at home). It doesn't sound like your description but I would watch it. If you start to get red or purplish streaks coming from the bite, see your doctor.

My bite was big like a wart filled with fluid but it was very very red, with a black dot in the center and streaks coming from it. I lived, obviously and kept my limbs. Thank goodness. I'm now paranoid of bites.

Maybe it was a nonpoisionous spider. Or a weird, Florida ant.

I would see a doctor.
Have you been hot packing it at all? You could try to place a wet, warm salted cloth to try to draw the fluid out.
Have you inspected it for the remains of a tick?

I hope it gets better soon.

Sounds like a deer fly bite. A CM at the Epcot monorail was talking about them being so bad. He showed us a bite he had that sounds like what you describe. He said they were very painful and it looked it. My son has a brown recluse spider bite last year and it was horrible. His entire upper arm swelled up within 2 hours and looked like a watermelon. It took weeks before it healed and about an 1 inch of skin all the way around the bite died. Luckily he didn't need surgery but it was very bad.

As a Floridian - your description sound like our FL fire ants. That is exactly the reaction I get. It should go away in a few more days. I hate the secondary round of itching!

Good luck!

I had a bad spider bite last year, and I remember the doctor saying a big clue that it was a spider bite was the dot in the center that almost looked like a hole (apparently where the spider had actually bitten). Of course a spot in the center of a bite can also indicate a tick--but this was more like a small hole. I also remember the bite actually hurting (enough to wake up at night) even mote than it itched.

Sounds like a fly bite (horse deer whatever it is called) We were just in Disney last week and there were soooo many of these flys!! My stepmom got bit up bad!!! Sounds like what you are discribing!!

Do they come out at any particular time of the day or night? Or should we plan on using repellent along with the sunscreen?

Thanks

I just returned from CBR a few days ago, and I have a couple of similar bites. However, mine were small - much smaller than a pencil eraser - and didn't really hurt or itch much. I just assumed I was bitten by a big fly (looked similar to a horse fly) that kept landing on me when I was at the pool. I never saw these flies anywhere but the pool while I was there. The bites are gone now, and no problems.

last summer, my daughter stepped in a fire ant nest while walking through the parking lot of CBR. it was dark, & we didn't see it. HORRIBLE. luckily, we had some bottled water in the van & were able to wash most off (after TOO MANY bites/stings) ttok her immediately to the pool & jumped in. They turned into puss-filled little blisters. I told the manager of the hotel...she could have cared less. I wasn't asking for anyhting, but i wanted them to kill them so no one else got hurt....the nest was still there when we left a week later.

There is a thread going on another board about these pesky little critters. We just flew home on Sunday and my hubby was bitten on his ankle by them and they itched him pretty badly for a few days and they swelled up like blisters. I think it depends on how allergic you are to the bite as to what it ends up looking like.

Personally, we were at POR but they were reported by others to be biting and Fort Wilderness, Beach Club, and Caribbean Beach.

Well, the bottom line is that we could all sit here speculating about what bit you for the rest of the month but there are so many possibilities that none of us could be right! If you are truly worried about it, there is only one person who can help you - that's a doctor.

On that note, I'm locking this thread as I feel it's been answered as best as possible in the circumstances and it's not a Resorts question.
