Just spoke to the CBR front desk and the Cheerleader Infestation has been confined, sadly, to my favorite island of Jamaica.

It's off to Aruba for my family. If you're going next week I'd advise highly to sleep anywhere except Jamaica.....

BJ

.....forgot to mention. The specific buildings the cheerleaders are being imprisioned in are Jamaica 43, 44, and 45.

Thanks for the heads up boltjames. I requested either Jamaica or Aruba, so hopefully they'll put us in Aruba. Wow, what a way to start a nice relaxing vacation! We enjoy CBR for the peaceful quiet atmosphere. Have a great vacation.:D

We were there in Feb when a very large group of cheerleaders was there. They were very quiet and well behaved.

I'm sooooo glad I read this post !! We were going to cbr next week ourselves, but as soon as I found out about the cheerleaders I called and changed to csr. Thank you thank you thank you.... no offense to cheerleaders.... just not my bag, know what i mean:smooth:

Just another one chiming in here, we were at WDW in late Jan/early Feb, and there was a pretty big dance team competition. These girls were super well behaved, exuberant (as only a gaggle of high school girls can be ;)) and we really did not experience any bad or inappropriate behaviour.

We're staying at CBR next week, and I requested Jamaica 44 or 45, but I have no intention of changing my request. I can't imagine the cheerleaders would be any worse than the thousands of other teens that are at WDW all year. Besides, this is just a few groups--aren't the others staying at the All Stars? I seriously doubt they will have any negative effect on my trip, but I guess I'll wait and see.

EPCOTLADY, I'm surprised you were able to switch resorts so easily with only one week's notice! I'm hoping that means it won't be too crowded in the parks. ;)

Normally I'd stick to my guns too and was all set for Jamaica 45. But I can't tell you how many times I've been in hotels with large groups of unsupervised high school students and have been in a living (not sleeping) hell.

It's not worth the risk.

Yes, you might get lucky and be surrounded by nice cheerleaders from nice families who want to study and get to bed by 10pm.

Or, what is more likely, is that you'll be surrounded by loud girls listening to Eminem on their boomboxes until 2am. Maybe there are going to be 5 adults for every group of 30 cheerleaders. No way they can maintain decorum though they'd like to.

Move on over to Aruba 52 with me. Non smoking, almost equidistant to the bridge from Jamaica 45. Nice and peaceful.

Whip out the slide rule and do the math:

For what these vacations cost and for the few days a year I get some time away from my family, no way I'm taking the risk of P Diddy keeping my 2 year old awake at 3am....

Make sure you post on the board next week.....I'll buy you a drink at the food court.

LOL, boltjames! Your post cracked me up! :teeth:

I think I'm going to stick with Jamaica (if I get it--it may be full from the "infestation" ;) ) because I really wanted to stay there after much research. But, I will definitely consider moving over to Aruba with you if things get too wild.

A cheer mom had posted somewhere that the adult-to-teen ratio was almost 1:1 in their group, and from experience I know for a fact that a lot of families do accompany their children to WDW for band, competitions, etc.

We get to bed pretty late anyway (and no little ones), so I'm not worried about the cheerleaders being out late. If they're out at 2 a.m. making a lot of noise, though, that seems like something resort management should (hopefully) put a stop to.

We go to theme parks often, and it's not the "unsupervised" cheerleaders/teens I'm bothered by so much as the unsupervised younger children. I can't tell you how many times I've seen grade school kids running around and wreaking havoc in hotels, parks, and especially restaurants with no parents in sight, or, even worse, with their parents right there!

I guess it boils down to the fact that obnoxious people can be found everywhere, regardless of age, sex, or whether they are cheerleaders or not.

That being said, save a room for me in Aruba 52 in case it gets bad! ;) :) ;)

bolt & tigger,

I'll be at CBR next week as well, requested Martinique, se we'll see when we get there. Bolt, your post cracked me up as well. My day job is as a counselor for "at-risk" teens so hangin' out with eminem listening, un-parented teens is what I'm taking a vacation from for 1 week. :D
By the way, I found the t-shirt that says "cheerleading is not a sport" online, but my wife said she won't wear it. Where's her sense of adventure? I don't forsee any problems, but I've been saving for 3 years for this vacation and would like to do all the prep. work possible to alleviate issues. We should pick a night to meet at the bar for a beer. I won't be online next week, plan on disengaging from reality (with the exception of March Madness and War updates). Hope all have a great week!

4 days to go,
Chris in Cincy

Well, as a Cheer MOM, I can only speak for the organization I come from. WE are an AllStar organization and will be competing at IOA the last weekend in March. WE are staying at Hard Rock. The ratio of adult to cheerleader is 1:1!!! We are travelling with 5 teams with the age range of 6-15!!

Yes, the girls (and sometimes guys) can get loud, but no louder than I have seen with the tour groups in the summer!!

tiggeroo42, you are absoutely right about obnoxious people being found regardless of age, sex or whether or not they are cheerleaders!!

From my understanding, this is somewhat of a big competion at WWoS complex. The girls may practice in a grassy area on the complex of CBR, but most of their time will be spent applying makeup, curling hair and watching their competitions!! They won't be in the parks during the days anyways.........

Good luck and hope you have a somewhat relaxing and enjoyable vacation!!

I agree with Rosemary. I too am a cheer mom. My daughter also cheers on an all-star team and we travel with up to 8 squads at a time. We have almost a 1:1 ratio too. The girls/guys are given a strict bedtime, and the rest of the time is spent practicing, doing hair, getting ready and watching our other squads perform.

I don't understand why people label cheerleaders the way they do. I've never been to a high school national, but all-stars are ALL BUSINESS. We're they're for a purpose, and spend a lot of money all year round so we can compete at a national level and not blow it.

I just wish everyone would stop labeling these very hard working ATHLETES!!!

tiggeroo42 and cmarsh01:

Let's all get together for a drink one night next week and discuss our experiences and report back to the forum.

This might bring a better understanding deep from the mind of the unknown animal known as the American cheerleader.

rbuzzotta and plutolovr:

Please bring 6 or 7 cheerleaders to room 5219 in Aruba so that I can do a complete interview and investigation and better understand the species. The only prerequisites: blonde hair, lip gloss, pink bikini.

Thanks!

BJ

boltjames,

You are definetly showing your age with that prerequisite!! LOL!!

Cheerleading has come a LONG way since rah rah shish coom bah days. The girls/guys are true athletes. If you have a chance, then tune into Fox Sports Network on April 9 (Wed) at 3 PM. It will show the NCA AllStar Cheerleading competition!! These girls work VERY HARD to accomplish the feats that they do!! Also, here is the website to my DD's cheerleading gym (eastelite.com), take a moment and check out the pictures........you will quickly change your mind.........they are pure athletes and SERIOUS about competing and winning!! They are truly dedicated to their sport and love it!!!

I do hope you have an enjoyable time at WDW and that you have peace without the cheerleaders......but remember, your 2 year old may be a cheerleader some day!!! By then, it may be an Olympic Sport...........

Sorry, there is no way that anyone could consider Cheerleading to be a sport.

Are the participants athletic? Do they sacrifice and train hard? The answer is YES to both of those questions, but not all physical activities are sports.

Any activity where "winners" and "losers" are determined by judging across multiple subjective areas cannot be considered a sport. Figure skating is athletic, but when results depend upon fragile french judges, you're talking art, not sports.

Sports involves direct competition with your opponent, for both males and thankfully in the year 2003, females. Jackie Joyner-Kersey running, jumping, and throwing. Brandi Chastain playing soccer. Cammi Granato playing hockey. Direct competition with your opponent occurs here. You don't need to wait to the end to find out if your style points were enough to overcome the fact that they scored 2 more goals than you did. "Sorry Ms. Hamm, your shorts were rumpled during that terrific 60 yard run that led to the goal, so we've called it back."

An Olympic Sport? It could happen. I mean the lords of the rings have given us Ice Dancing, which produced vote swapping between Russian and French Judges. I can see it all now, the 2012 Olympic Gold for Cheerleading goes to Odessa Texas High School, because all judges from former communist block nations got confused and thought the girls represented Odessa, Russia.

Calcio,

Obviously you have a problem with cheerleading ( and figure skating). Whether an "art" or "sport"......to each his own. Bottom line is...these young girls and guys do train hard and are very dedicated.

If I had my choice of a daughter that was a couch potatoe and just wanted to hang at the mall, go to every dance around, IM all day then no thanks..........I love my cheerleader daughter and all she stands for!! It is great that there are organizations to suit just about every childs needs, sport or art, it is a great world we live in where children are able to pick something they love and succeed in it. Unfortunately, they have to contend with others just wanting to burst their bubble. Whether or not is becomes a legal "sport" doesn't matter to us.....our daughter is strong, athletic, disciplined and a very good student to boot. She is happy and well rounded.........and I can say that about all the girls I know from her gym!!

I choose not to debate whether cheerleading is "sport" or "art". I am just glad my DD is happy with her choice (she gave up softball and soccer) and the bottom line is..........she is very much in shape, healthy and mostt importantly Happy!!

Wishing you the best on your vacation. After all, Disney is a magical place.

One time, not too long ago, we were staying in POR. Lots and lots of cheerleaders were there too. I am VERY strict and picky and easily annoyed. The adult women "supervising" the young ladies were the ones who annoyed me with their immature behavior (they had lots to drink). The girls were fine.

I do have to say that we did have trouble with the fact that each morning they were in the parking lot warming up/practicing at 5:30 each morning. For us, keeping our systems in Mountain time, that was like 3:30 am.

Here's your last post:

"I choose not to debate whether cheerleading is sport or art."

That's not exactly accurate. Whenever the subject of cheerleaders comes up, the chorus of cheer enthusiasts proclaim to the world that it is a sport. If you need this reinforced, go back and look up your earlier posts. Anyone who disagrees is a Visigoth or worse. I did say it was an athletic activity, requiring work and sacrifice, just not a competitive sport. So maybe I don't have a problem with cheerleaders, just with those who claim it is something that it clearly is not.

I well understand your pride in you daughter. She must be a fine young lady, well rounded and content with who she it. Raising young ladies (or gentlemen for that manner) in the year 2003 isn't easy. The distractions we had in the 70's are magnified and more available and open. Any activity that teaches youngsters the reward of work, sacrifice, making good choices, working in teams with other good kids, leadership, etc is incredibly helpful and positive. Your daughter's excellent school record has unquestionably been helped by the discipline she's learned from her outside activities. That's no different from kids who grow as individuals through participation in theater, to young ladies like my own 18 year old, who has grown a million miles through her participation in soccer and lacrosse.

Wow! I suppose with my dander up I've gotten off the Disney track. I hope everyone who goes to WDW has a good time. Given the state of consumer confidence right now, I suspect the parks and hotels are pretty empty, so your visits should be relaxed and enjoyable.

Cheers

Calcio:

Was your wife a cheerleader? Is your 18 year old daughter a cheerleader?

I ask because I think I would love cheerleading if I ever dated / created one.

They are better than the rest of us, thus the angst you feel by never being near one. I gave one a ride to McDonalds once. I'll never forget the experience.
