No offense to the Tiki gods but in my humble opinion this is a cave. We requested garden view not to be in the middle of the garden (or have the garden on our porch) (a garden view) would presume to have a view!!! When you look to the end of the room it should have a view, not a 5 foot towering plant that blocks the view of everything, as this one does. I would suspect that there were only a few rooms like this and not all would be the same. But this one was. As far as the Musty smell
”musty smell has only been reported in a handful of lower level rooms in Tahiti”
So there is a problem of musty smelling rooms it is being reported by numerous guests, Also please look at the dirt circle around the cieling fan. In the dictionary (Websters) a cave or cavern: is to be enclosed in. Please take a look at the picture. It is an enclosed room. Now with all of that said we still had an excellent experience at the Poly it is a wonderful resort and we will go back but not to room 1002 of the Tahiti building. This was only posted on the boards as help for those non plant lovers or those who do not wish to sleep with a large "possibly" carnivorous plant hanging or snooping at their only outside view of a beautiful resort!:D
I stand by what I said in my previous post. I thought these boards were to help folks and all I was doing was to inform of what we ran into. All in all it was a fabulous trip and we will go again and stay at the poly (not the room with the PLANT though it scared me, I think it was eyeing my smaller child) at any rate It was all good and I was just trying to help others who were not lucky enough to be in Hawaii concierge lagoon view (away from those vicious plants). Pixie dust and Mouse Magic to all from one Poly lover to another and I would not be scared of staying at the Poly Just keep up with small children around the plants at room 1002 Tahiti Building!

Wow! Looks like the landscapers need to get the pruning shears going! We love the Tahiti, but we love the ground floor view of the beach! When we go next year the Tahiti building is scheduled for room renovations. I hope we get the beach view after they repaint the ceiling!

Maybe some people like the big plants for privacy. I probably would have asked if I could switch rooms or something.

I didn't care for Tahiti's location. It's great if you want to walk to the TTC, but it's too far from GCH and the pool.

Wow, that vegetation sure is "lush". I've never stayed in a 1st floor room at the Poly before (we always request 3rd floor because we prefer a balcony) but I would take the privacy afforded by a huge plant outside my room over people being able to see in my room.

In your case I would have just requested to be moved to another room.

That was my whole complaint on my original post, "Just back 10 days at the Poly" that seems a lot of people have misunderstood. A reader is now scared to go to the Poly because of the "cave" description of the room. When we arrived on the 4th of July, I checked in and requested Fiji longhouse. The lady checking me in said "what is a longhouse?" and it all went down hill from there. She was not a longtime cast memeber, but a intern, Maybe this had something to do with it, I do not know but she was not very willing to help or very understanding. When we got to the room I was willing to make it work and decided to make the best of it but when I opened the curtins, to me it just made it worse. I went back down to talk to the lady and told her I was unhappy with the smell, and the cave like feel that I had due to not being able to see out my doors well. She did a quick look at the computer and said "no there are no rooms at Fiji". I went back to my room very upset and decided to talk to a manager of some sort, he was in the back, who was fantastic! His name was Fili. He looked at the computer and said there is nothing we can do tonight, (being after midnight maybe, I do not know) here are all the rooms available in that Fiji longhouse go take a look, and if you are not happy there I will check another longhouse for you, and we will put you in there tomorrow morning. After the move, we could not be happier. I wish now I would not have posted my original post and said "cave" for so many people to get angry at. I was just trying to be informative on our room and give our feelings on it. Wow, has it gone bad here on the boards.

Well, did you ever get a garden view. I have to agree with WeLoveThePoly - I'll take the lush vegetation over people staring in my room anytime. But we got the same type of view over at the AKL last year. Believe me - it was much better than what was on the other side of the bushes - the parking lot.

Things have gotten pretty bad around here but you have to take everything with a grain of salt - everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You still love the Poly - just not that room/view. We're going next month and it will be our first stay at the Poly so I'm debating on what longhouse to request. This hasn't scared me one bit - just helps me to rule out an area that I might have considered before.

Thanks for your honest comments and photo.

lovmy2girls - Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience.

When I lived in Atlanta, our apartment the first year was much the same. Although it was 1st floor, the building was built into a hillside so the place felt more like a basement. Then the vegetation was right up against the patio floor to ceiling. Twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year and we NEVER saw the sun. I had to put my lamps on midnight or noon.

I couldn't stand it then and I probably wouldn't now. Although, I do have to say Tahiti was by far the most convinenient place to stay. I adored having TTC next door!

I've heard complaints about some Lagoonview at GF also. If I spent all that extra money to get a view of the castle and only saw a pine tree I'd be unhappy also.

yes they need to cut down the trees at GF, but remember if you book a lagoonview room at GF it does not gtd you a castle view or even a magic kingdom view at that. You can be looking at the contemporary or poly.

Hey now - don't get down on New Jersey because of one post. Most of us here are pretty nice.

We have stayed at the Polynesian twice and are heading back for a 3rd time this Sept. I have to agree with you that those plants would have made me feel very enclosed. Privacy is one thing but your "view" was a little much. DH is a landscaper and probably would have been out on the 1st day doing a little "pruning" of his own (he really hates an overgrown landscape)!

I really think the experiences of us all help in keeping our favorite resorts on their toes.

I, too, take offense to the "NJ and beer" remark.

We once had a palm tree in front of our window at the GF. I couldn't see how they could get around that without cutting it down - and you wouldn't want that to happen. We made the best of it and my kids had fun looking for lizards on it all the time.

That room has a horrible view no matter how you phrase it and "cave" is pretty good.

I wouldn't even want to sit on the patio as you'd have a plant staring at you from every direction 2 feet in front of your chair.

I've had a tree blocking our view before but it was one tree and you could look around it and to the sides and still have some sort of view.

I also appreciate the honesty of the OP....and would make sure i didnt get that room the next time im there.

Please do not let the sometimes over zealous defense of Disney resorts get to you personally. It truely is not about you, it's about the resort. Some really are way too protective of a place to stay. If you did not like it and it reminded you of a cave, then that was your personal experience. Someone else can say they love the Polynesian. No one is wrong, just different opinions.

Personally I would not want that room either. I am not sure I would have used cave to describe it, but it would not appeal to me. I would find it claustrophobic.

I have tried to like the Polynesian. We have stayed several times. Other members of our family love it. It just does not appeal to me. It's too much for me. Too much noise, too much smell, too earthy, too tropical. My senses and allergies just can not handle it all. I always felt I was in a jungle. I love to visit for dinner, but that is enough for me.

The pool during the summer was always crowded during our stay, the parking lot too. I felt at times due to the number of people who love to visit this resort, that I was still at the parks. What I dislike it about, is probably what others love.

If in sharing what we like and dislike about Disney resorts others that have never stayed there can determine whether it would appeal to them, then all opinions are beneficial. The pros and the cons should always be welcome.

This does not make it bad place to stay, it is just not what I want for my vacation.

Thanks Sammie and Peter1706. This "cave" remark has gotten so misunderstood. A lot of people think I was talking about the decor of the room not the actual feeling it gave to me due to not being able to see out my window. I think the rooms are very beautiful. I was not trying to SCARE anyone off from staying at the Poly. With any resort, there were a few bumps along the way, no place is perfect. If I were to go back today I would stay at the Poly in a heart beat. I thought this is what the boards were about to let everyone know the good and the bad that one experiences. :D

lovmy2girls, thanks for your post. I'm staying at the Polynesian for the first time in 2 months and I want to hear it all! It's useful to know that while there are mostly great rooms, there are a few not so great rooms and I don't have to settle for those.

I think I'd get a Vitamin D deficiency staying in that room! Glad you got to move and enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Exactly Jen D, What one person would like, someone else might not. The rooms are beautiful and so is the resort. You just want to feel happy with your location and room. Don't settle for something you are not happy with.

I've never stayed at the Poly, but I'd certainly rather be looking at the view from that room than at the view I can see from here! My office walls are not too bad (they're covered with pictures of my family vacations to WDW) and the window looks out on a parking lot, so ANY view at the Poly (even overgrown plants) would be a great improvement right about now!

Don't assume that Hawaii concierge lagoon view is so much better. Just had a similar experience although it was not to the extent your's was. Booked Hawaii CLV. Thought there would be no question about the view. I paid the same thing everyone else on the floor did but my view was of plants. I was in the last room on the floor and it was the ONLY room on the lagoon side that had plants in front of the patio. I had requested first floor so that my three year old could play on the grass in front of the patio. No such luck. To exit the room by the patio you had to step over rocks, bushes, and through palm trees. Wasn't what I wanted or expected and I had waited until 4:00 for this first floor room. If you ever pay for LVC don't get room 1518!! I made the comment on this trip that when I was at the Poly 13 years earlier it had the tropical, well-groomed look and this time it looked like a jungle. Just not for me.
