Caution with mopeds in Mexico/importance of purchasing cruise insurance..

I hope that by posting this story it will help prevent future tragedies. A local young couple traveling on a cruise line were killed in Cozumel when their moped was hit by a Taxi.

The couple in their late twenties were cruising to celebrate their engagement. Their ship docked in Cozumel on November 23, they proceeded to visit Cozumel and rent a moped/motorcyle. They were hit and killed by a Taxi driver. They were not wearing helmets. The female was a high school teacher and her fiancee was the mascot for UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso). It is so tragic, their families were on television talking about their plans for their future. Neither one of them took out the cruise insurance and their families are struggling financially to get them home.

Please, please take out the insurance whether you think you will need it or not. Accidents happen.

Cozumel is a beautiful place, we plan on visiting this summer. But we will not rent any type of moped or motorcyle. The driving is crazy and you just aren't safe. My husband travels to the interior of Mexico quite often and tells me stories of all the accidents he witnesses. We also live 10 minutes from the border of Mexico and we walk over. Mopeds are fun and popular, but they just aren't safe. The driving in Mexico is different and dangerous.

A young woman from our block was killed a few years back while riding a moped in Grenada (the spice island). She was also hit by a driver. A tragic story and it is good to know that these things can happen, even on vacation.

Back in 1989 I took a Bermuda cruise with my cousin. We were looking forward to renting mopeds and taking in the island. After we docked we went up on deck and watched person after person rent mopeds and then lose control of them and crash. We decided to take the bus around the island instead.

In all my travels, i have never wanted to rent a vehicle, because road signs and rules and regulations are different in every company, and i just don't like taking that kind of a risk.

How awful for the young couple and their families. I hope that they will be able to get them back home...
