Does anyone have this problem with their cats, and if so, what do you do about it?

My cat, Fergie, is a very loud meower! It sounds more like she's vocalizing like Siamese cats do, except she's a grey tabby. Who knows, maybe she's part Siamese.

Fergie does it when I get home from work, and it takes her a little while to settle down (or maybe finish her recount of the day's events.) But the bad thing is that she also does it at about 3:00 AM and I live in an apartment building. She wakes me up, and apparently, my upstairs neighbors. She does it when I've been away for a few days and sometimes she'll bring me a gift (usually a dirty sock from the laundry) and "announce" it. At 3:00 am. I end up whispering "SHUT UP!" like a maniac and eventually she does.

Does anyone else have this problem? I tried shutting her out of my bedroom, but then she sat at the door and cried. I can't imagine squirting her with a watergun would have the intended effect.

P.S. -- Diana, Cat #2, goes directly to bed and doesn't utter a word until the morning!

Oh we do. Our female cat, Bear, is LOUD. She's just like her daddy in that they are very vocal. She doesn't like to be alone and she loves to "chat" :lmao: Thankfully we live in a house but she drives DH crazy sometimes.

We have a female kitten, Sheba. She's very quiet. Or so we thought. She just went into heat and OMG is she loud! I'm expecting male cats to start knocking on the door!

Oh dear! My cat started doing the same thing. I've been away a lot lately. I had jury duty for several days in a row. I'm home at night, but she's not used to being left alone for so many hours. I freelance & usually come home more often.

After she eats, she will head to the front door & meow loudly. I think it's a habit she's developed when I wasn't there. Since she sleeps a lot, I think the times she realizes I'm not there is right after eating.

At first, I'd call her away from the door, let her know I am, indeed home. She'd stop for a few minutes & then start again, like she'd forget I'm home. Now, I have to physically go to the door & shoo her away from it. A couple of times, I've picked her up, comforted her & walked her away from the door. Other times, I just yell for her to be quiet because she'd head for the door again. It's gotten very annoying.

If anyone knows how to solve this problem, I'd like to know too.
And, no, my cat is not in heat. I've had her for 4 years. This is recent, in the past couple of months.

My one cat is a loud talker. She likes to meow, especially when we are eating dinner. She has done it her whole life though. Thankfully she usually sleeps through the night. Usually if she starts the meowing and I just ignore it, she'll give up. I wish I could help you solve the problem. She is 15 years old and I never found a solution. I just learned to deal with it.

But the funny thing is my younger two cats don't meow. I guess they think the oldest does all the talking for them. :confused3

LOL, I have a solution, but I don't think you want to hear it :rolleyes1

We'll put her to work on the next challenge.

I have the same problem with my new little bird, Koda. He is a quaker parrot and chirps LOUDLY in the mornings...thankfully between 8 and 10 am...but it's annoying. Usually if I talk to him, he'll snap out of it.

One of my three cats is a big talker. I always talk back to him and encourage him to talk. He doesn't usually do it in the middle of the night.
I don't have any suggestions, but I hope you don't get rid of him.

R3 --

Fergie lets me know when I've spent too much time at the computer. She's going to have a sore throat by the end of WPASADI!

My grey tabby does the same thing, especially right when I get home from work. He has to follow me around and howl at me, and God forbid I spend any amount of time on the phone--that's when he goes into his, "Hello, I need attention! Hello, I need attention! Hello, I need attention! Hello, I need attention! Hello, I need attention!" routine. Those are really the only times he's overly vocal, though, and it does kind of give him personality, so it doesn't bother me too much.

We have this problem with our cat but unfortunately, it started when our other cat had to be put down. So, we thought it was just mourning/her looking for the other cat. It has slowed down some (it was pretty much most of the time at first) but that middle of the night wake-up call is quite irritating. We live in a 2 story house and she will be down on the 1st floor and meows loud enough to wake me up.

I have yet to find a good cure. Sometimes things will work but usually only for a few minutes and then she gets loud again until she decides she's done.

Our 15 year old black cat, Woody, is a big talker. He probably has a good bit of Oriental Shorthair in him- he is tall but very slim, and has the big ears and pointy, wedge shaped head of Orientals.

He has always been pretty chatty, but he has gotten a lot more vocal in the past year or so. IMO, it is because he is getting older- I know he doesn't get around as well as he did, and I suspect he doesn't hear or see as well, either. I think he just wants to reassure himself that we are at home- he walks around and yowls, then waits for someone to yell to him.

He has started doing this "stroll and yowl" routine at least a couple of tines every night. I usually end up yelling at him to "come upstairs, you silly cat! We're in bed!"

My cat Josie is extremely vocal. She has done it her whole life, in fact that is how she got our attention at the pound. I really think she was separated from her mommy too soon. Because it seems to be a separation anxiety thing. Even after giving her lots of love and attention, she still does it. Believe it or not, to calm her down, I usually throw a blanket over top of her. I don't know why it works, but she loves to be under the covers or inside boxes and as soon as she is under cover she calms right down.
