For sports, drama and cheerleading, do you still have try outs or are you automatically placed on a team or squad? When my dh went to a Catholic high school, he said that everyone made the team or squad and didn't have to try out. What is it like at your Catholic High school? Thanks.

My kids don't attend but many of their friends do. They have tryouts just like public high school.

I know that when my DD was in a Catholic middle school, anyone could be a cheerleader or play soccer (as opposed to the public middle schools) but have heard it is much different at the Catholic high school level (at least here).

As far as the Catholic schools around here are concerned, you have to try out. In fact, the Catholic schools have the most competitive athletic programs. There is one Catholic HS in our state that won the state hockey championship for 20 something years in a row.

I believe they are like this around here too. I don't think they would be state ranked if they let everyone who wanted too play.

I went to Catholic HS and not only did you need to try out, sports and drama were ultra competitive.

Our local school--I think they try out for the usual stuff.

As far as drama--typically anyone can be in the club--but auditions are required for shows.

Athletics and cheerleading were top notch at my Catholic HS. We Went to State for every sport every year and won quite a few times. Cheerleading became so competative that they added a junior squad. We were an all girl school. Oh and drama was fierce. We had a very small stage and could only do plays with few characters. Choir and dance were also top notch.

It depends on the school. My Catholic HS was pretty small, so there was some sports where everyone made it, just because the number of people going out for certain teams wasn't very many. Our drama and other fine arts was different -- they were top notch, so you defintely had to try out for spots there. :)

My kids go to an extremely small Catholic high school, so they never really "cut" anyone. I don't know how we manage to have such competetive teams. If you don't mind sitting on the bench well your on the team, and actually they have had some girls get sick and injured so the girls BB team is really looking slim. Sitting on the bench for the first half of the season has really payed off for a few girls. In the middle of the boys BB season the coach actually made a plea to a reporter for any juniors who wanted to play next year to go ahead and come to practice this year.

For golf, the best five are on varsity and go to tournaments, but everyone else gets to play. So, basically every week is a tryout for some of the girls.

For soccer juniors and seniors can play jv.

I did just read that we are having cheerleading tryouts for next year, where as we didn't even have enough girls for a squad 2 years ago.

nope, at ours you tried out (although drama was discontinued after my sophomore year.

Anyone who wanted to be on a team automatically got on at my school. Considering there were only about 50-75 people per grade there, obviously the teams were desperate for any warm body to fill a spot. :rotfl: It was a terribly small school!

Mine was the same way. In fact my HS 'recruted' in the Jr Highs for sports, band, choir, drama the same way colleges recruit in High Schools.

The top tier football players often went to the local all-boys Catholic HS but if they wanted co-ed they always went to my school over the public school. There are several alumni who currently play in the NFL.

Baseball and Soccer were less popular but that also has to do with the area. Basketball was a different story as the real talented players tend to stay in the public schools.

Our band has been the Bands of America Grand National Champion 7 times and has been the state 4A Champion for 23 consecutive years.

Drama was very competetive also. It was also quite popular. During the spring musical it wasn't uncommon to see football players and cheerleaders trying out next to band 'geeks' and the drama club regulars.

Both Natalie and Vince had to try out for all those things at their Catholic HS, through the 90's. Some they made, some they did not. Same for Marie and me, way back when.
