CatholictotheMax.com has some neat t-shirts and artwork. I got my son and his sponsor their "Let the Fire Fall" t-shirts last year. They both loved them! Neither are knick-knack kinds of folks. I also got my son a Confirmation prayer book...it has every common Catholic prayer, novena's, stations, rosaries, etc. Another idea is to get a statue of the Confirmation girl's saint...the one whose name she took for her Confirmation name. Another idea would be either a charm bracelet or a necklace with a dove charm.
As for the First Communion, picture frames are nice, rosaries are traditional (but I wouldn't give one unless I had a blessing from the parents first). There was also a really darling "First Communion Kid" t-shirt online a couple of years ago...I think it was from the Catholic gift company that's out of St. Louis. One thing I've given are rosary holders...statues of Mary with her hands praying. I've personalized them with the name and date.
I still have a plastic statue of the Holy Family my teacher gave me when I made my First Communion...42 years ago! And, I have a cloissone (sp?) dove that my Confirmation sponsor gave me.
Personally, I strongly prefer a real gift...something that has thought behind it...over cash.
