First time cruisers - family of five (kids aged 6, 8, and 10).

We had hoped to get two connecting staterooms to give us a bit more room, but none available (any category) on our cruise.

We could get a category 4 - which it seems sleeps 5, but description of these cabins implies they're a bit small for five.

Anyone any experience of five in one of these ?

Also I understand there is a fold out / down bed which sleeps two. Could anyone advise what this is and how it works ?

Thanks

The Category four cabins have a queen bed(which can be separated into two twin beds), a couch that folds into a single bed, a pull-down(from the ceiling) single berth above the couch, and a single murphy bed that pulls down from the wall between the couch and the verandah.

I would think that it could be tight quarters for five adults for a week but with 3 being children it probably won't be bad.

I have done a category 6 with 2 adults and 2 children and we had PLENTY of room. The cat 6 is just a bit smaller--there is no Murphy bed and the sliding glass door is literally at the end of the sofa.

Our three children were 10,9 and almost 8 on our last cruise and we had a 4. I rather liked it, it was cozy at night. It did get a bit crazy but mostly because of the narrowness which I think you'll have with all the cabins. As long as everything is fairly neat, you'll be ok.

The only problem is that when the Murphy bed is down its hard to get into the streamer trunk and out to the veranda. That was worse than being over crowded.

It was rare that all five of us were in the cabin at the same time, only waking up in the morning or getting changed for dinner. Even at night, my yougest would be in bed already when my oldest and I would go to bed.

Hi Dave...we have done a Cat 4 3 times with our teens....one being 6 ft tall. When we all were in there getting ready for dinner at the same time it got a bit tight, but the rest of the time it was fine...there was even enough storage space for clothes (and that includes 2 teen girls!!!) LOL!!!

I know here in the US we call the beds that sleep one... twin beds (never could figure out why) and the UK calls them single beds (makes more sense).....so....the cabin has a queen bed that can stay large or be split into 2 single beds...then the couch converts to a single bed, a single bed comes down from the ceiling and finally a single bed come out from the wall (Murphy bed) that lays across and in front of the veranda door. You can still access the veranda but you must climb over the murphy bed. This is only a problem at night and early morning when all the beds are down...during the day the bed is in the wall and access to the veranda is not blocked. Also the bed is turned back into a couch during the day so you have seating available and the bed from the ceiling is put away so you won't wack your head!!

Hope this helps.

Now that they they are all older we do opt for 2 staterooms...it is much easier to have 2 bathrooms and plus...the teens can't stand daddy snoring!!

we are also 5, me, dh, dd 16, ds 14 and dd 12. on the previous three cruises we stayed in cat 4 with no problem at all. the children actually enjoy being together and the stateroom is set up so efficiently that space is never a problem even when we are all in residence. the split bathroom helps and the last person in gets the murphy bed.

the murphy does block the verandah and the dresser but that is solved by taking clothes out the night before. my dd sleeps so soundly that climbing over her will not wake her up.
