Our beloved cat died a month ago and dd and I have been looking for a new cat to give a home to. Yesterday we found one she liked at the humane society (it was new to the center and not ready to be placed). Today we adopted a different cat from another rescue. The truth is, I think I wanted the cat we adopted more than she did and now that little one is home with us my dd is so very sad about not getting the humane society cat. I didn't realize how much she wanted the other cat until now. I don't take adoptions lightly so please understand I'm not cavalier about pets and their feelings, but I have to consider dd's feelings, too. I don't know if we should just keep this little darling or take it back and get the one that apparently is very special to dd. DH welcomes the new cat but will not let us get two cats. What would you do? :confused3

beg dh to get two cats!! Explain that cats do a lot better when they have company, and they will not get in the way. BEG BEG BEG!!!
That's what I would do. I just rescued one in May after my Lorelei (see avitar) died in late Jan. :goodvibes

I would feel so bad for the cat you got today if you took it back. What a head trip for it, you know? I think your DD will learn to love this one, I wouldn't even raise the possibility of taking it back.

I wouldn't take the cat back. What would that say to your daughter?

There's usually a grace period when adopting animals - especially from rescues. Just take it back. But you'd better make sure the other cat hasn't been already adopted out today. If you try to come back a second time for the same cat, I wouldn't give it to you again.

Thanks, everyone. I'm hoping that she will feel a little better in the morning. I'll keep you posted!
(Enjoyed the photo of Lorelei!)

Honestly two cats is not much more work than one cat. Why won't he let you have two?

I'd try and find a way to get the other kitty so you could have both.

Two cats do much better than one. They keep each other company and the cats don't tend to get so lonely when you're gone.

By the way, sorry about your older pet that just died. That's so sad.

Agreed.

We got two when our first cat died, and they keep each other company.
Other than the increase in food, litter and an occasional Vet bill....OK, the cost does increase some, but it really isn't any more work.

I'd go get the one your daughter wants too.
