Cat question for EsmeraldaX

I know you know a lot about cats and maybe you can help us.
We brough are cat home from the vet (we got here fixed)
the vets office is closed so we cant ask them.
They gave us a cone to place on her head so she won,
t lick her stiches.She has taken it off 3 times. She doent seem to be licking herself yet. But the vet wants us to keep it on her for 2 weeks ,we cant even keep it on for 5 minutes.She is sleeping now .She was freaking out in the cat box so we put her in a babybed that she cant get out of it has more room and she seems fine now!
If there is anything you can suggest it would be very helpful

Hi,

I'm probably not the best cat expert around here (there are quite a few who know way more than me) but I'd suggest keeping the cone off and just keeping an eye on her.

If she has not licked at the stitches yet, she probably won't. The cones are not always needed, just a precaution. If she's taken it off that many times, I think it may be stressing her out more than she needs right now.

Just keep a close eye on her. Check the area around the stitches to make sure she's not getting at it. If she is, you may have to try putting the cone back on but keeping it on may continue to be hard. Some kitties really do not like things around their necks.

Is she calm without the cone?

Yes she is very calm without the cone she is sleeping now.
She was very freaked out at the vets they con't get her out of the cage but when she heard myvoice and my sons she was fine we were able to put her in the cat box.
I think I will just wait and see. thanks for your help

Two weeks with the cone?? Never had that for any of ours that have gone through THE operation. We were just told to keep any eye on it and discourage a lot of licking in the area. Never was a problem, even when own took her own stitches out after about a week.

Not the one you were asking for, but as a cat owner/lover, I figured I would throw in my two cents. Honestly, none of my cats ever needed that cone after they were fixed. None licked or pulled at the stitches either. They were quite gentle with themselves about running and jumping. I echo what Esmerelda said and just keep an eye on the kitty... I am pretty sure all will be fine if you don't make her wear the cone Oh and if I remember correctly, I think after about a week, the cats were more or less back doing what they normally did. I have to agree here, I have had many cats fixed and by several different vets...........never once was I given a cone for them, I'm wondering what the charge was for it! I wouldn't worry about it as long as she isn't messing with the stitches, in a few days she may try and this maybe because they itch which means that it is healing.
I do remember when they fixed my prairie dog she had to wear a bandage that looked made her look like a sumo wrestler......it was a hoot, that lasted about 1 hour after she woke up.......never did get it replaced.
So unless there really seems to be a problem I wouldn't worry about it.
Did they tell you to use shredded paper in the litter box for the first couple of days? I didn't do that either but like I said I never have had a problem.
