We've had a field mouse in the house all winter - I hope it's only one, but who knows? I have 3 cats, so the thing (or things) more or less lives in the garage. I've never seen it, but the cats appear to be chasing it around the top of the basement wall.

Last night, I saw my littlest cat eating something and it was the mouse! He chewed his foot off. I'm not sure how the poor thing died.

My question is.....should I have the cats checked out by the vet for anything? Could this little field mouse have given them a disease if they ate or chewed on part of it?

What do you guys think?

BTW - we gave them lots of treats for catching the mouse and not allowing him up into the main house! Gotta love the country!

I would think the biggest issue might be getting some sort of parasite from eating the mouse. You might want to call the vet and see what they think. A quick deworming would take care of that if they thought it would be a problem.

I could be wrong, but I think if they are up to date on all their shots, they should be ok. I get my cat's shots at Petsmart and one of the packages they offer is for outside cats....has something to protect them against parasites they could catch from other animals.

If in doubt, call your vet to be sure kitty has the proper protection.
::yes:: Better safe than sorry!!:hyper:

I was told that cats can pick up tape worms from eating rodents.:( Yucky!::yes::

I just called the vet and she said they generally are harmless, but I made an appointment for May 12. I have to get a stool sample. Thank goodness she said I only had to bring one. Can you imagine me trying to sit there and get a sample from each one so I knew whose was whose??

I'll keep an eye on them until then just to make sure.

Now I'm going to disinfect the garage and the basement and plug any holes that lead from the garage to the basement.

I tried to be adult about it, but inside I'm all grossed out!!
