Any word on the current status of the light removal from the castle? Is it known how far along they are in removing the lights?

We are hoping for crane free pictures in two weeks. We often go in January and have never been to MK without that crane

The crane has been out for several weeks but removal only happens after park close.
During the day the crane is down and behind walls behind the castle.

You will not have any castle pictures (from Main Street) that feature the crane

ETA/
As of last night probably 90% of the lights were off the actual castle (not sure about the turrets/stage but those dont use the big crane) so I wouldn't expect the crane to be out at all come your trip

How long the crane stays in place and whether it will be "up" at any point during the daytime hours would depend on whether / what type / if any maintainance work they will be doing on the Castle after the lights are removed.

The crane has always been "Up" and visible during our January trips. Normally you'll see it on the upper right side of castle pictures when taken from Main Street.

We will be there in 2 weeks, any chance the crane will still be out?

It was in our castle pictures last time we were there in February for Mardi Gras (2016), But I think they were actually working on the castle.

I was wondering what they were doing as I hadn't heard about any construction at the parks other than TSL and SWGE at MGM, but saw the crane and wall in Fantasyland a couple weeks ago. Why are they removing "lights" from the Castle?

The lights are only used during the Christmas season. They go up around October and come down in January.

I was there in Jan 2016 and seem to remember a news item that the crane was sticking around longer for some sort of castle work beyond just removing the lights that year. So you might be right about 2016.
