Castaway Key and Frances

Does anyone know how much damage CC sustained during Frances? We were on that 10-night cruise and by the time we finally got back to Canaveral the CMs at the port still didn't have much news about the island.

Not nearly as much as we all feared since the Magic went to CC yesterday.

According to the Captain of the Wonder it was mostly beach erosion and broken trees. The port itself faired well. They are replanting the trees and were working around the clock to restore the beach. I'm sure the cruisers on the Wonder and Magic this week will see how quickly they worked because they are up and running again!

I was on the 9/11 Magic and we were the first cruisers back to CC. The island was pretty brown but otherwise fine.

Yes, Castaway Cay's vegetation is battered and brown, as is expected after taking a near-direct hit from hurricane Frances. But the beaches are still gorgeous, the buildings are standing and, as aways, the service is outstanding. We enjoyed a MAGICAL day.


BTW, as a reference, central florida looked MUCH worse after hurrican Charley than CC does after Frances. It truly is amazing how well the island withstood the storm.

One more note: True to Disney form, as you exit the ship, Disney has already erected a sign showing the path of Hurricane Frances. It includes details of the storm and the damage it inflicted. It was a sure photo stop yesterday!

We were very lucky that the damage was able to be cleared so quickly. After Floyd the big probelm was the damage to the dock. The new dock is able to withstand a category 4 or 5 storm and looked fine. Yes the vegetation is brown but we had a ball!! There ie erosion on the family beach but they are working to restroe it. The buildings all looked fine to me, mostly cosmetic damage from waht I could see. But then I don't know how much damage may have been done to the technical things like water, electricity etc. And I wish I could thank all those who made it possible for us to enjoy CC so soon after Frances!
