I enjoy the "class" of the DCL fleet (nice wood, no casino) but the highlight is sailing a Hobie cat in 80' water on Castaway Cay. I looked at the other cruise lines private islands but they don't seem to compare to Castaway Cay. Does anyone have a good Castaway Cay substitute? Should I looking at a land based vacation?

No other cruise lines island imho comes up to CC Princess has princess cays its ok, but not as good.

I've heard and read good things about RCCL's Labadee, but I haven't experienced it myself. My impression is that it's more built up than Castaway, but that there are a lot of fun things to do as well.

We absolutely loved CocoCay. It is split into smaller beaches which gave us a feeling of NOT being crowded like Castaway (even though we go at slower times) feels. There's no sea of humanity to look out on; just your little inlet.

There are also chickens living there which is neat. The terrain is different, more natural, as well, which I liked.

Imo the only thing they could do to make it better is have a 5k*. Other than that it's perfect in my eyes.

*But since they don't have a giant landing strip on Coco that might be tricky.

If you really like Castaway you could find a land based trip to the Caribbean for a lot cheaper and enjoy the beach every day of your vacation.

As far as the beach goes, Carnival's Half Moon Cay is beautiful. The water is crystal clear (there was no seaweed…several years ago). Castaway Cay's BBQ blows Carnivals out of the water. I remember having to rent a beach cabana tent (I think that was what it was called) to help protect us from all the sun. You have to be tendered over to their private island. I think if Disney could remove all that seaweed from their family beach area it would be the perfect private island. I know that pelican bay at CC didn't have all that seaweed, which made it wonderful.

Biggest draw for CC is that the ship just pulls right on up making it so easy to get to the island. Also, the family beach faces west, so you can get plenty of sun throughout the day.

Of course, the ships can't always dock.

Overall Castaway Cay and especially Serenity Bay is the whole package. However Half Moon Key is lovely as the water is far superior to Castaway. It is the most beautiful colour and clear to the bottom.
