When we were in our mid-20's, my younger sister & I went on a (first & only) trip alone together touring CA. She has always been very jealous of me (& I was of her growing up - go figure!! - girls!!

)
Anyway, we were at Redondo Beach & I told her that we should lather up good & only lay out 1 hr. & then cover up. I don't really burn, but she does. I still remember her exact words, "No, YOU cover up in an hour. You just want to get darker than me. I'm staying out an extra hour".
Well, that's what we did and needless to say, she looked like a lobster that evening in the motel. She was in agony!
We went to the motel desk & asked what we could possibly do to relieve the pain & lessen the burn. I don't know if the clerks were sadistic, ignorant or what, but they told us to go buy Noxema skin cream and to lather up real well with it. Not knowing any better - the saps that we were - we went out & bought a BIG jar of Noxema.
I remember telling her that my best friend used it on her face all of the time & I think it burns. Well, that's ALL I had to say - she thought I didn't want her to lose her color.
SO.....I'll never forget it - it's funny now, but it sure wasn't then - she went into the bathroom & COATED herself with the Noxema. At first, the coolness must have felt good because she was talking away and then, all of a sudden, I heard a blood curdling scream and, obviously, the Noxema began penetrating her skin & scorching her even more.
The end of this (long) story is: I had to rush her to the emergency room where they washed her, packed her in cool rags, gave her RX's & said she had severe sun burn, sun poisoning & sun stroke & we couldn't continue our scheduled trip for the next 3 days.
