So, who knows just who Casmir Polaski is?! Well, here in Illinois he is a famous Polish fellow, so famous that we get a day off from school each year in March...usually the first Monday in the month. Is this holiday celebrated by anyone else...or more importantly, would this be a good week/end to hit WDW. I'm looking at next year, depending on when Easter was. I'm thinking if Easter is in late March or April, that the first weekend in March might be a great time to come. (At least compared to early June when we came last year). Any opinions would be appreciated!!

Easter falls very early this year - at the End of March, so I would have to assume that spring break season would start at the beginning of March this year.

I don't think you're going to run into anybody celebrating Casmir Polaski day though - unless you run into any other Illinois-ers! :)

Does anyone know when Easter is NEXT year....2006? That's my target date.

Easter is mid-April next year - like the 17th or something. We were going to go right after Easter 2006, but now I think we'll wait till 2007 because I want my youngest to be 4 when we go.

Sounds like early March WOULD be a good time to go in 2006 then! I think we are the only state that celebrates this holiday...hope we do so next year, too! Colleges don't have many spring breaks this early in March, do they ?

Actually, a lot of colleges' spring breaks are early March, I'd say the 1st-3rd week were most common...we've never gone in March or April so I don't know how crowds are then...

Hey, I remember Polaski Day! I grew up in IL. When I came out to Boston, people were like "Polaski-what?" I think IL is the only state with that holiday. And if it's in early March, you shouldn't encounter terrible crowds.

When did they stat celebrating Polaski Day? I graduated in 1976.

Well, i think we've be celebrating it about the last 14 years. A little less than MLK day has been celebrated.

It is Pulaski not Polaski. He was the man who started the calvery. He is a very very very distant relative of mine..... There is even a street in Chicago baring his name:) Unfortunately even though he is a relative I don't get his birthday off work, go figure:)

just a note to Soupermom - have been in early march twice - didn't find the crowds to be bad at all. nothing like easter, pres day, holiday or summer rush times. great weather! (especially if you are in a cold winter state!)

DH proclaimed it his 2nd most favorite time to be there (Sept is still his favorite because crowds are way low - he may change his tune if we get caught in a hurricaine down there someday.)

- lori

by the way - i can say for sure that in no part of PA is Pulaski Day celebrated. (i am a native of the Pittsburgh area and transplanted once to mid state PA then over here to the Philly area - never heard of this day.)

Ahhh, yes. Good old Pulaski day. We celebrated it for a few years when I was in grade school through middle school, but my high school and colleges didn't get the day off! We learned all about ol' Casimir but I'm afraid I don't remember anything about him other than the fact that he was a revolutionary war hero who died. I can't imagine WDW being too busy as a result of that holiday since we're the only weirdos who celebrate it! ;)

Just wanted to let you know, not ALL of Illinois gets Pulaski Day off. We live in Naperville, in the Chicago burbs, and our district does NOT get it off. Many times one of my kids has had a Chicago field trip that day. The museums and such are empty becouse none of the city schools are field tripping that day. We always have Spring Break end of March, regardless of when Easter is.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. This time-frame is sounding better and better. We often have snow in early March, so anything above 50 would be a heat wave to us! If it is cooler and less crowded than early June, I'd be SOOO happy!!

I'm originally from Naperville, and my brothers still go to grade school and high school there. They USED to get it off. Maybe they changed it now and it's no longer a holiday.

I remember that Holiday when I lived in Illinois...I was on the opposite side of the state from Danville...I lived in a little town called New Baden and went to Mater Dei HS in Breese Ill....I miss it over there

What is it with you Midwesterners anyway? Casmir Pulaski Day, Sweetest Day...all of these made up holidays that the rest of us don't have!! And you get the day off!?!? Man, the rest of us need to start making up some new ones! :D

Growing up in NJ, we didn't have the day off, but there is a bridge named after him - Pulaski Skyway which goes between Perth Amboy NJ and Staten Island, NY ( Easy way to get to NY when the drinking age was 18 while NJ was 21 :D )
