cars vs. busses

We are always at OKW and always have a rental car for transportation to and from the airport and grocery store etc. We like the car for going to other resorts for dinner etc, but NEVER take the car to the parks. It is so much closer to get off the bus and walk in than to go in from the parking lot. It is much faster at certain times as well. They only time we have had crowded conditions on the bus has been when returning after Illuminations at Epcot. I like the bus for the most part. We don't usually wait an inordinate amout of time, and some of the drivers really make it fun. It is also nice to strike up conversations with other guest going to the same place you are going.

We almost always use Disney Transportation. We have been traveling to Disney for the past 18 years sometimes with a car sometimes without. We introduced the children to Disney Transportation from the beginning. Buses, boats, and monorails are just as much a part of our Disney experience as the theme parks. As young adults, they feel taking the car to the parks would be like missing part of DisneyWorld. When the parks are closing and everyone is rushing to stand in line to catch a bus, we take our time strolling out enjoying the quietness that comes over the park. Waiting for a bus with a handful of people talking about the day is much more enjoyable then standing in a long line of tired, grumpy "ADULTS", (tired, crying children are always accepted since mom's and dad's have pushed them to their limit ). The only time we use a car is to grocery shop or take a day to go resort hopping other than that the car never moves until we check out.

I hate to disagree with this crowd, but I wouldn't want to go without a car. Some bus routes are very long from BWV- over an hour each way- and with small kids I really don't want to sit that long. We also have always went outside for some meals, like at TGIFridays or other chain restaurants. Last year we went grocery shopping, to a mall to buy a stroller, and to Universal. It just gives you more options without that much more expense over transfers.

I think I have to agree with Kara and Rose, it's just much more fun, (for us) to have our car. We liked to hop around, going from resorts to parks for lunches, or relaxing or whatever...plus we could store all the goodies we bought right out of the park, and not lug them around...and lastly, while there are some things worth waiting for in WDW, I'm afraid we just didn't think busses were one of them.

Just one opinion...but I'd never be without a car...

It's a psychological thing with me. I take the Disney transportation around the parks (Buses and boats) but I like knowing that I can get into a car and get off the property if the need presents itself. Sometimes' there's only "so much" mouse I can take.

We generally go with the busses for anything inside WDW and have the car for shopping outside WDW.

One exception ... when you are trying to go to early entry, then if you are going by bus you have to get out there about 15-20 minutes earlier.

It is really miserable to get the kids all dressed and out the door only to stand there waiting for a bus as the early entry time slips away. So this is when a car can be especially useful.

On our 1st couple trips to WDW,we used buses exclusively.We found that if we had PS at a resort resteraunt,it took over an hour to go from resort-to-resort using WDW transport.We started timing all trips,starting the clock when we left our room till we actually entered the park/resteraunt and doing the same thing on the trip back.The average was somewhere around 50 minutes each trip.Adding to this waste of time was standing up on packed buses about half the time.So then we started driving everywhere. What a nite and day differenceCut the time in half.Plus we got to know our way around WDW, got to listen to our radio,etc.. What we really love doing is heading to Epcot about 9:00 pm. The parking lot 1/3 full with empty spaces starting right behind handicap area.We hop into Epcot,find fav spot to watch fireworks,back to car,back to resort & in the hot tub 10:10. Can't do that with a bus. Only time we use bus is to MK because bus drops you off right at the enterance.
