Carrying your camera on rides

I got my DH a Nikon D5000 for our anniversary and it's our first DSLR camera, so we're newbies with tons of questions. We want to take it to WDW but Dh is worried about carrying it around and taking it on rides. What do you do?
Any suggestions on bags?
It came with a 18-105 lens which is obviously longer than our point and shoot, which feels weird right now when wearing it around his neck should I buy a new smaller lens or will it be okay?

Bring it. Most if not all rides are fine. I carry a Tamrac Adventure 9 bag, its big, but it has room at the top for our family snacks and other stuff. 99% of the time the camera is in my hand while walking around and on the rides. If you do not need a backpack for family/kid stuff then a small bag will do for times when you want to put it down.

Also, make sure you have a zip lock back large enough put your camera in during a downpour in the event you get stuck in the rain.

Absolutely take it!!! We went last month and I took the D5000 with me on every ride we went on except Space Mountain. I had a plastic sleeve that acts like a raincoat but I found it to be cumbersome with it on while taking pictures. My lens is a Sigma 18-250mm which weighs about 1 1/2 pounds without a camera hooked up to it. I bought a new strap and slung it over 1 shoulder and under the other which made all the difference in the world. The D5000 holds up to a good amount of abuse. Roller coasters are no problem, I just held it with 2 hands and had the strap around my neck the whole time. Kali River Rapids was awesome and some of the pictures came out much better than I had hopped. I just took a large Disney bag and threw it in whenever I thought there was danger ahead.

Get yourself a good bag (I got this one so I could carry everything now and still have room to grow).

Heck I took it on rides with me (I'm a big guy and I could still tuck the bag at my feet on most rides).

How else do you get shots on the ridse?

Both pics were taken with my Canon 300D and a 50mm f/1.4, taken in Sports mode.

I took mine on everything. I have a 50D and had my 28-105 on there most of the time. Just don't forget a plastic bag in case you need to keep it dry. and you might want to invest in a comfy strap.... it makes a big difference if you like to keep your camera around your neck like I do.

I love the pictures on this board. I have a feeling my DH will wish we didn't have our 3 kids with us at times so he can take a million pictures and not listen to them whine

It's hard to get good ride photos if you don't have your camera with you.

wow, I thought I carried around a big bag.

My thought was I wanted a bag that would be able to hold more gear down the road. Right now all I have is my 300D body, the 18-55 kit, the 75-300 zoom, and a 50mm f 1.4.

But I do want a big L lens....either the 70-200 f/2.8 or the 100-400, and eventually I will upgrade the body and get an external flash.

The bag was EXTREMELY comfortable to wear and it didn't bother me a bit.

Great ride shots Mark. I was able to get a couple of really nice ones of my daughter on rides this time too, but I'm still sifting through the 1000+ shots I took on my last trip.

For those that don't want to carry around a big camera, get something like a Nikon S8000 point & shoot -14.2 megapixels, 10x zoom, macro setting & HD movie. Invest in Photoshop and learn how to professionally color correct, resize & sharpen your pictures. Your pictures will look great!
