As others have said we just use a rolling carry on to get all the alcohol for the group in one place. We have always traveled with at least 4 adults. Kids swim when we first board so whoever is watching them also gets to watch the carry on bags. Never had any issue with breakage just pad enough to keep from being too noisy.
Interesting about the cooler rule, I never would have considered not being allowed to bring my DCL cooler back on board. I was definitely planning on it for our upcoming cruise.
