I don't have a list, but I know I have seen them on this site and I am sure someone will post a link. You should always pack anything you can't live without, very valuable or medically necessary in your carryon. Prescriptions, glasses, camcorders/cameras, cruise documents and the like. Anything more than that is personal preference. Remember you generally have to leave your luggage unlocked due to TSA regulations (unless you buy a specific lock that can only be opened by TSA) so don't leave anything valuable in your luggage that you would be heartbroken if it were missing. I've never had this problem, but I have heard about others who have.
As for the limits, I assume you are asking about the airlines' rules. The airlines typically allow each passenger to bring 1 carryon and 1 personal item. Personal items are usually a purse, small backpack, briefcase, etc. A personal item generally has to fit under the seat in front of you, where the carryon has to fit in the overhead. I don't know the dimensions, but roll aboard luggage usually indicates if it is able to be carried on. You can also check your airline's website. They have the actual dimensions there.
As for the camcorder, if you bring that in a case, it will constitute either a carry on or a personal item. The airlines are getting very strict about this - you can often do better if you can put it inside another bag that meets the size requirements. I just found a backpack style camera bag at Target that will hold my camcoder, 35mm camera, digital camera, film and accessories all in one. That will count as a personal item when we board. My kids always bring a backpack with gameboys, coloring books, books to read, essential stuffed animals and a change of clothes (you never know!). I also make sure I have food and snacks - depending on the airline you are flying, you may not have any food options on board. The airlines are really cutting back on food service. Travelling with hungry kids is a nightmare, so I always have granola bars, fruit roll ups and the like.
Hope that helps!
