Got a quick question for all you seasoned cruisers.

My MIL just called and said she thought she read in the Passporter that your carry-on has to be a certain size.

She also wanted to know if each PERSON can have a carry-on or is there a limit of any kind? Also, is there a luggage limit in general (i.e., number of bags a party or person can have).

Thanks!

Dcanoli--

I'm pretty sure there are no practical limits for luggage. You drop it off with a porter--it's not weighed or anything. Just make sure your tip is commesurrate with the quantity and size of your bags!!

As for carry on, I'm think they are much more concerned with what you bring on (e.g. guns, explosives, etc.) rather than how much. Unlike an airplane where there are space and weight limits on the plane, as long as it'll go through the X-Ray machine, I doubt they care how much stuff you bring. These are 80,000+ ton ships where everyone has their own room to store things in!!

Depending upon the category of room you have (some are pretty doggone small), you might want to be mindful of how much stuff you bring, even if there are no real limitations.

i know that in the docs, they only give you enough luggage tags to have 2 per person, but i think they can make more if you need them for your carryon. ON my last cruise i carried on 3 pieces with me and they didn't have a problem with it. One being a huge rolling hard case full of camera equipment.

So, by "carried-on," do you mean--you actually carried on three bags or checked in three bags?

I really hadn't given much thought to this until my MIL brought it up...thanks guys!

Nope...no real limit on how much you can bring on...However from experience....take as little as you can. And remember what you "carry on" you have to lug around untill your stateroom is ready...which can be as late as mid afternoon....so just keep that in mind.

Well, that's the point my MIL was trying to make. If we go swimming when we get on board, we're gonna have to carry around our dinner clothes plus any other stuff (i.e., make-up, cameras, etc.), and who wants to be lugging that around all day?

Don't pack your dinner clothes. Chances are high that you will have you bags by then. What goes in our carry on luggage are: bathroom items make up, hair dryer, meds, items you have to have if your bags are lost. If your main luggage doesn't arrive in time for dinner wear what you have one. In 16 cruises, I only wore shorts once to dinner, and the reason was that my bags didn't arrive in time for dinner. (Was not on DCL) Just remember, your carry on luggage must fit through the screener, just like the airport. Happy Cruising Kathy

We each carried onboard a rolling bag and a backpack type bag that had our snorkle gear in it. plus i had another small backpack. nobody seemed to care. We didn't check in till 1:30. our stateroom was ready so we dropped off everything in there before going to lunch. our checked luggage was delivered quickly.

Even though "I'm a mess" I'll give you my two cents <G>.

I would definately bring a rolling suitcase the next time instead of carry on type bags.
I saw plenty of people with very large rolling suitcases when they boarded. It seemed a lot easier then my family carrying three carry ons plus pillows! Next time I'm throwing everyone's stuff in a large rolling suitcase and we can take turns pulling it.

I remember reading about the size limitations on carry on's too and I'm not sure why it's stated that way. Possibly because if you carry on for a plane your bag has to fit under the seat or in the above compartment. The ship isn't the same way, you have to be able to carry it all.

I agree that it's easier to carry bags that roll and we didn't pack our dinner clothes either.

I think I read where you have late seating and if that's right, definitely don't pack dinner clothes.

We packed pillows in our checked luggage. :teeth:

I don't believe they limit you to any number of carry on pieces. It needs to fit in the xray machine. It is the same type as at the airport. Just remember, you can't get into your room until 1pm and your checked luggage show up anytime that afternoon. You will want to carry on something you will not mind carrying to lunch, the pool, etc. I would bring a small suitcase with wheels, a backpack or something that size. I have seen people wheel on coolers before.

Carry on things you can not do without, swimsuits, medications, travel docs, sunglasses, sun screen, swim goggles, etc.

They have towels of don't worry about those.

That's what I thought, but I'm telling you people had huge suitcases while boarding!!

On our last cruise we carried on our electronics (digtial camera, laptop that we used to watch DVD (we now have a portable DVD player, so I don't have to lug the laptop), portable CD player and speakers. We did not carry on any clothes. Oh we carried on bottled water as well. I can't remember if there was a size requirement, I was too buy turning on all our crap. LOL

You can carry on anything you want. I gave everything to the porter except cameras, camcorders and bathing suits for kids. It gets to your room very quickly. You can have as much luggage as you please. The porters will give you extra tags. The luggage will fit under your beds for storage

Great information guys! (I love the way it keeps coming!) Everyone has so much to input on what happened to them, and I feel like it covers all my bases!
