Carry-ons

(copoied form another post)

(Sorry, Boy Scouts must ignore the next paragraph.)

Don't touch anybody else's suitcase, including when helping him, except by holding the handle firmly. You don't want to be responsible if it slips out of your hand and falls and something inside breaks. You don't want to wrench your back or be jerked off balance trying not to drop the suitcase.

If someone wants you to help with his suitcase, the least he could do is offer the handle.

(Also you don't want to get your hands dirty with whatever that suitcase rolled through on the sidewalk).

Still better, if someone asks for help with his suitcase, ask him to show where he sits and drag it over to go under the seat and save the trouble of lifting.

Three carry ons for five people should be no problem -- provided that there are enough hands that are strong enough to carry them and are not forgetful as very young children's can be. Each person is allowed one so you could have five carry ons for five people.

Thanks for the advice! My 2 older DDs are 9 & 11, so they can each roll one, DH can take the larger carryon, while I roll Baby in stroller. Not a bad deal!

We have all gotten into the habit of packing essentials for a least 24 hours in our carryons. We also spend the night before a trip in a hotel near the airport (park n fly purposes). Therefore, our carryons also double as an overnight bag on the way to our destination. On the way back our carryons contain our more valuable items and our souvenirs. (Since TSA can go through your checked luggage, I would hate for anything to go missing-I feel safer taking it with me.)

Last year on ATA in chicago, thought I was going to be escorted off the plane and make the tv news when the "stewardess" informed me my $350.00 COACH back pack purse was a "back pack" that need to go in the bin. I beg to differ the other stewardess just said you could hold your purse, she agreed and said that is a back pack not a purse, and I pointed it out it was an extrememly expensive purse and no way being tossed up in a bin! I was holding it. (it is not even the large size, it's medium size back pack purse).

This whole thing was really about the fact that we were assigned the aisle seat that a business man was seating in talking to her and he had to move, so her conversation ended.

The purse was my only carryon and we had already checked 2 (1 large and 1 medium) sized suit case in cargo.

Well it turned out for the best cause during this conversation I noticed the ENTIRE back 2 sections of the plane were entirely empty, and they were shuting the doors ( I was still standing talking with the stewardperson). So I asked, is any else coming "no" well then can we spread out we are all bunch up in the front section and I was speaking very loudly, she had to say "yes" we picked up our stuff and moved to the back and had a private cabin to ourselves! Several other people immediately spread out to, but the plane was so empty that it was GREAT!

Give the DH a break and check the luggage. MCO is huge and carrying a piece of luggage through it is no fun, regardless of the size. Roller pieces in the hands of a child is a dangerous weapon, I cannot tell you how many times a child has zigged and darn near "capped" me or tripped me. They are kids and have really no conception of what they are rolling behind them. Face it, every one is in a hurry, excited and looking forward to getting to their vacation destination, they are not as watchful as they would normally be. It is, IMHO, far easier to curb or counter check that luggage, walk to the plane without tugging something behind you or doing the "pack mule" thing, fly, get off the plane and walk to luggage pickup, wait a few minutes and the luggage is there. Those few minutes can be a "lesson" in waiting, which is what you are going to do a lot of at Disney. :) Give yourself (and other travelers) a break, this is vacation!!!!! They are VERY fast at MCO and your luggage will most probably be there by the time you are or very shortly after.
Lewis is correct, they rarely loose luggage, especially with the advent of the bar code. It does happen, but, from personal experience one in better than 25 years of flying does not constitute a tragedy (especially since it was on the way home).

I apologize if it's already been answered-but what do they consider a laptop and are you able to use them on flights?

A laptop is considered a personal item and you can use it on flights while at cruising altitude. A purse is also considered a personal item. You can have 1 personal item & 1 carryon. When I take my laptop & a carryon, I have to stash my purse into the carryon. My carryon is small enough to put under the seat in front of me, along with the laptop.

When going through security, you have to take the laptop out of the carrying case. They provide bins to put it in to run through the x-ray.

You may use the laptop until the boarding door is closed and again once the plane reaches 10,000 feet (they will tell you!). During desent the laptop must be turned off (once again they announce it).

I am sorry, but I was in the Orlando airport today and over half of you doing "Carry On" should be forced to check your bags! Remember that YOU or your designated family member must LIFT this bag into the overhead. Also, if your 22" has expandable capability and you EXPAND it, don't be surprised if it does not fit. Mine was expanded so I checked it.

You will probably also need to CARRY the luggage down the plane aisle. I noticed the other day that about half of the carry ons would not roll down the aisle. Just to be on the safe side assume you will have to carry it down the aisle (some airplanes they roll better then others!)

Personally most of the people I see doing big carry-ons look like miserable pack horses, but to each thier own.

A vulture boarded a plane carrying a dead rabbit under each wing.

The flight attendant told him "I'm sorry sir, but you are only allowed one carrion."

I purchased a new carryon a few months ago that I just LOVE. It has extra wheels and can be wheeled SIDEWAYS down the aisle of the plane.

I agree that if you have to take your wheeled carryon on board, then be sure you can LIFT IT yourself!. I often travel without the DH and pack lightly for that reason.

If I feel that it is too heavy, I will check it.

Every time we fly I have this debate with myself...carry-on vs. checked. I have to say that the last time we flew to WDW we flew PanAm. At that time they allowed no carry-ons!! You could have a pocketbook and that's it!!! Of course, mine was of the humoungous size! But, my point here is...the boarding and getting off the ground and then getting off the plane was incredibly fast. Nobody searching for a space for the barely regulation size bags etc. Now, my dh takes the camera bag, with 35mm and video camera in it, and dd and myself take our back-packs and check all the rest. Much easier all the way around.

I wish all airlines would adopt that policy, what a wonderful thing it would be. Off course, exceptions for baby stuff would have to be made, but, other than that, I think it is great.

Well many of the low cost carriers in Europe have already implemented severe carry on restrictions, which I have to say really does speed up the boarding process. Each passenger is allowed 5kg of carry on which is very little (my small computer back pack barely made the weight limit). You must weigh you luggage and they will make you check it if it is over weight. I was amazed when I got on the plane nearly last and there was open bin space all down the plane.
