have read somewhere that if your carry on is too big they make you check it. If I am on a connecting flight and they make me check it after US customs where would I have to check it at??? Thanks for any help.

I don't recall ever seeing where they would disallow a carry-on while going through customs. I think it would happen at either the check-in desk, or security.

If you pre-clear US Customs at your departing airport, you will not go through US Customs or security again. You will go straight to your connecting gate.

I cold be wrong, but I don't see this as being a concern.

I clear customs in Toronto not in Saint John NB. so how does that affect me???

You could start by looking ahead and be prepared when you board in NB, so you don't have to scramble and be in a fluster in Toronto and worrying about checking extra bags. The carry-on bag allowed must not exceed a size of 23 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm (9 in x 16 in x 22 in), which is equivalent to the size of a small gym bag.

Last press release from Transport Canada:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/mediaroom/releases-2010-h007e-5812.htm

When I flew on the 29th of January, I was allowed my purse and a personal item for carry on. In my case it was my laptop.

I feel my carry on is the correct size, but.. Anyways, AirCanada always looses my luggage so this time I am trying to not check any luggage since my last 7 day cruise with no luggage was not very fun. I stil lwould like to know where I would have to check my bag. Thanks

Um, at the check in counter in NB?

At the gate before you board the aircraft.

bbangel I hope you are correct. I do not want to have to find a check in counter all the way at the front of the airport with a 90 minute connection. Your answer seems the easier one. I hope you are correct.
Thanks for the help,

Thanks for the help,
Your flight from NB to Toronto won't be a problem. The carry-on restrictions are only for US bound flights. So what that means, when you get to your departure gate in Toronto, your bag must fit into the airline's carry-on baggage sizer at the gate. If it's too big (or the Attendants think it's too big), they will gate check it and will return it to you on the jetway when you exit the plane.

You might see these same rules when flying back from the United States to Canada. This past December my family and I were flying home from Tampa - Toronto on WestJet the ticket agent told me my carryon bag was 6lbs overweight, however she then said it would be up to the TSA agent at the tram entrance who decides if I can bring it on or need to check it. Now I was told my bag was ok to go through, so when I say you might have that problem is because I thought it was weird for them to say the decision was up to the TSA agent and not the WestJet ticket agent.

Check it at the gate sounds good to me. Thanks for all the info. I feel it is the correct size but you never know.

Honestly, it seems to me that the carry on might not be your issue. On that score, quite honestly, keep your items to the minimum. Even now, the less you carry, the quicker you'll get through.

I'd just want to confirm the logistics of managing a 90-minute connection. I confess that I've never done this through Pearson.

But I've started my travels through Pearson, and these days it ain't pretty. DSIL flew to Dallas last week, and from the moment she took her shoes off, to the point where she'd got them back on (and after she'd been through the full body scanner, and the staff had inspected every single pocket of her purse and opened her lipstick - honest) it took slightly more than 30 minutes. She arrived at the airport three hours before departure, and said she'd do exactly that again. This was for a mid-day departure.

When we start at Pearson, the routine has usually been:
Check in to get bag tags ('cause we already have boarding passes, so heaven only knows why it takes so long) - 30 minutes
U.S. pre-clearance: 20 minutes
Security: 10 minutes

This has changed substantially, of course, since late December. A DF travels weekly to the U.S., and he's arriving at ridiculous hours to ensure he gets through in time to make the flight, to make his meetings.

Well a few weeks ago we were lucky and got the green light but most of the people got the red and as we walked along we could see them with their carry ons completly emptied on tables and getting full pat downs. This was in Pearson.

On the way home, they were swabbing peoples hands for explosives, and checking carryons randomly in the boarding area. One guy had to get a full pat down as well just because they are checking people. But not once were we told we could not take anything on the plane.
