Carry On Weight Limit???

We are flying AirTran in August and will each (4 of us) be bringing just 1 carry on bag. I went to the AirTran website and saw that they have specs on how big the carry on can be but no where did it say a weight limit. Does anyone know if there is any kind of weight restriction for a carry on bag when flying AirTran?

Where domestic airlines publish a weight limit for carry-on luggage it's generally 40 pounds or less. The common sense weight limit is nothing heavier than you can lift over your head and place in the overhead compartment with no assistance.

Thanks for the information. I doubt ours will be that heavy but just wanted to check.

usually 40 lbs or less -- fill it up, lift it & try to put it on the top of your fridge -- if you can't --it'll be too heavy to do in an airplane as well.

What gets me is people who expect that a flight attendant should be responsible for getting heavy bags in to the overhead compartment. I'm not saying that anybody here has suggested that; it's just something I've observed too many times when flying.

As PADISFAM said, if you or somebody in your party can't lift your bag on top of your fridge and it won't fit under a seat then you shouldn't be bringing it.

I personally prefer to have bags that fit under the seat in front of me so that I can access our stuff easily during the flight. Our snacks and activities for the flight are in our carry on bags so I don't like the bags being overhead. I fly Southwest so I don't worry about the number of checked bags so all I need is the stuff we use during our flights plus anything we'll need when we first arrive at WDW before our luggage arrives. It also means we don't have to wait for the driver on DME to find our bag under the bus when we arrive at the resort as our bags are small enough to fit inside the bus with us.

Just on our recent flights to and from San Diego I was amazed at how often I heard flight attendants tell people they could not touch their bags...meaning that a customer had just asked if the FA could help them.

We use non-wheeled, very light luggage. We are strong people, but when we get it up to about 20 lbs combined weight a bag is a big pain to haul! I think that when people stuff a carry-on SIZED bag with *wheels* they just don't even *think* about lifting it up.

I remember a business flight in '00 I took where my colleagues and I were staying for the summer. One of my co-workers decided that she NEEDED to bring all of her CDs with her, and they had to go ON the plane with her. She hauled a carryon sized wheeled bag through a frantic dash across O'Hare and every time she had to lift that thing I thought she was going to pass out. I'm fairly sure she had hardcover books in that thing, too. Crazy.

Oh, that's great! The fridge is an excellent example, PADISFAM! Thanks for the comparison. I know I sure can't lift a standardly-packed rollaboard that high.
