Carry-on Question

Is your carry-on measured at all segments of your flight? We connect in DTW and ATL and I am wondering if they measure each time. Our local airport said our bag was ok even if it was slightly larger than the measurements. (I had it pre-measured ). I just want to make sure the other airports aren't going to measure every time.

I've never actually had one measured. I just carry it on. It they hand me a yellow tag I figure the plane is on the small side and they put it underneath for that leg of the flight. If they don't I assume it will fit in the overhead.

I have seen some HUGE things carried on that I couldn't believe made it on. I don't even know who would measure the bags. The size is the airline rule, I think. Not TSA.

I've never seen one measured.

Since it appears you are flying from the UP, you will probably be on a small commuter sized plane to DTW. Since these don't have much of overhead storage, as you board the aircraft they will probably take your bag and stash it somewhere. They will then give it back to you as you get off the plane.

On your other flights you'll just take the bag with you and put it in the overhead or under the seat in front of you.

If you are chosen at random to have your bag measured and the bag is even slightly larger than the maximum permitted measurements, you may have a problem.

But I would protest on the spot an oversized measurement done over a bulge that disappeared when the bag was turned on a different side.

A person at your local airport can't even guarantee the airline at your local airport will let an oversized carryon bag slide. The statement is less then worthless at a connecting airport.

You may have a problem if your bag only fits in the overhead bin lengthwise.

Carryon bags are generally measured with a sizing template, if you can squeeze the bag in the template you'll be OK>

We have such a small airport that only one person basically works the counter so I probably won't have a problem there. As for dimensions, the only way the bag goes over is because of the length, the wheels are what make it slightly too long. The width and depth fit. Does that make a difference?

No. If it come to being measured ALL the dimensions must be within the limits.

It may be ok at your local airport but be warned you may have trouble at other airports.

Yes. The dimensions are designed to make sure your bag fits in the overhead bin. A passenger who tries to sneak in a bag that only fits in the bin lenghtwise is being rude to other passengers. I guess it depends on what you mean by "slightly" too long. Half an inch might work.

The question isn't if the airline will measure the bag, the question is if the bag will fit in the bin "wheels in".

Charges for checked luggage result in more carryon bags. Don't count on being allowed to stow an oversized bag, at the expense of other passengers.

It might be time for new luggage.

your carry on can be checked at every airport you enter. Typically it is at the gate where you run into issues, so you could get to your connection and run into issues.....

Beware of the differences between airports and airlines on what is the acceptable number of carryon items too, not just the size.

In May my airline (Air Canada) accepted, as listed on their website, the roller bag, a second over the shoulder bag, within a certain size, AND a purse/diaper bag etc. Had no problem leaving Halifax. On the return trip, out of Tampa, there was security standing at the enterance to the gates not allowing us past them until we had somehow managed to shove our purses into one of the carryons! You can imagine how easy THAT was! Once we were at AC's gate out came the purses again no problem.

This incident will definitly figure into my packing plans for next time!

In the US, it's one carryon bag and one personal bag. The purse or diaper bag would be a personal bag.

It really depends on the airport and if the gate agent is a stickler for the rules. If the flight is full, they might be more strict. When the overheads are full, they will force the remainder to gate check. It's only fair that those whose bags are within the regulation size get a space.

Actually, it is usually whether your bag will fit in the sizer used by the airline. If it won't fit in the sizer, you may have to check it, even if you have flown with it wheels first on this aircraft on this airline a hundred times before. -- Suzanne

Agree with Susanne. And there is a good chance these days that people will be turned away; I HAVE seen bags measured and weighed in America, not just in the rest of the world.

This is such an irony; thousands of posts complaining about lack of overhead bin space, and every so often a post asking if they can get away with taking a bag which is knowingly too big for the posted limits.

We cannot have it both ways.

If it is too big, it is too big. Find a different bag, both for your own sake and for the sake of your fellow travellers.

I wish I could say that. I have seen Air Tran out of DFW measure bags (both carry on and checked bags) several times. They do stand the bag up and measure from the top of the handle to the floor (so including wheels, as well as handles), they then measure width (again including any handles or pockets), then measure the depth. They include all wheels, handles, pockets, and any buldges when they measure.

I just flew AirTran out of BOS to ATL, ATL to MCO, MCO to BWI and BWI to BOS. Never once did they measure any bags. From ATL to MCO the airline was offering to check bags for free. The flight attendants were very helpful with carryons, finding room etc. Extremely cheery bunch. Some of the best I have seen in the past few years.

There were 4 of us. DH had one large duffle - total measurement of 48" and a back pack. My DS had one small duffle, his friend had a rolling suitcase. I had a computer bag and a camera backpack. Nobody batted and eye and all flights were full.

Loading took no longer than normal, but unloading did seem to take an extra 5 minutes or so.
