We are flying US air. I know they accept wedding dresses but what I want to know is would that be my only allowed carry on? I would like to take along a big bag as well as I normally do when traveling.

Has anyone had this experiece?

Are you planning on carrying on the wedding dress? Where are you planning on putting it? There is minimal closet space on these flights, and usually the only one is the very small first class closet that's suitable for hanging a suit coat, not a wedding gown. If you put it in the overhead expect that others will stuff their bags in on top of or next to it, and it will be bunched up up there as well.

If you do carry it on, it will be your only carry on except your small personal item (a purse or camera bag for example. You will not be allowed a second carryon.

I assume from your sig that you're doing a custom wedding - therefore my advice would be to spend the extra money and buy the dress its own seat. I've heard of destination brides doing that before, and never once seen one say, "gosh, that really wasn't necessary". I have seen brides who didn't buy an extra seat regret it though. When you've invested that much into your wedding, it's worth it to me to buy a little plane insurance for the dress :)

Another option would be to have the dress shop package and ship the dress via Fed Ex to arrive a few days before the wedding.
