I recently went to Carlsbad Caverns and took my dad and son with me. I lugged a tripod down with me on the trek to get some shots in the dark. I'm still learning and the lesson I learned is that you need to remember when you've gone to manual focus and then MANUALLY FOCUS!!

This is difficult for people with glasses who are near-sighted as it is and attempting to manually focus without glasses is challenging.

This is a mixture of flash and long-exposure with a Canon XSi. I took all my lenses, but managed to only use the 18-55mm, which was another minor mistake. However, there's really not a lot of room on the trail for a tripod with people speeding to the bottom and not being able to see a tripod leg, etc.

I was fairly pleased with the results but some pictures aren't as crisp as I would have liked. It was definitely a learning experience.

enjoyed the photos, went there when i was a kid( before the real claustrophobia set in, hmm maybe that helped bring it on as i remember them turning out the lights so you could see how dark it was and me totally freaking out. MRI techs that have had to deal with me since should thank the carlsbad rangers:rotfl:)

with my canon( 40d) if you are manually focusing, hold the shutter 1/2 depressed and the green light on the far right of the viewfinder will come on when focus is accurate....personally i can't see the subject well enough to manually focus but the light helps. whyu did you take your glasses off though? and do you have the diopter focus set?( wheel on the little hump by the eyepiece /flash on my camera and on my old rebel)

I should wear bifocals, but don't since I can read fairly close up, but my "trick" I use for reading (tilting the glasses farther down my nose) doesn't work as well for focusing.

Thanks for the Canon 40D manual focus trick. I'll see if the XSi does the same thing (I hope so).
