I recently went to Carlsbad Caverns and took my dad and son with me. I lugged a tripod down with me on the trek to get some shots in the dark. I'm still learning and the lesson I learned is that you need to remember when you've gone to manual focus and then MANUALLY FOCUS!!
This is difficult for people with glasses who are near-sighted as it is and attempting to manually focus without glasses is challenging.
This is a mixture of flash and long-exposure with a Canon XSi. I took all my lenses, but managed to only use the 18-55mm, which was another minor mistake. However, there's really not a lot of room on the trail for a tripod with people speeding to the bottom and not being able to see a tripod leg, etc.
I was fairly pleased with the results but some pictures aren't as crisp as I would have liked. It was definitely a learning experience.
