How does blowing up cargo on a cargo airplane scare us exactly? There must have been more to this, right?

How does blowing up cargo on a cargo airplane scare us exactly? There must have been more to this, right?

From what I've heard, the cargo plan was supposed to blow up over Chicago, thus "raining" fire and plane parts over a very populated area... Thus, killing people on the ground, and causing chaos and fear.

That's what I heard too. Last weekend's bombs were a trial to see the timing they needed so that they would blow up over Chicago. From what I've heard, cargo is an area where security is less than it should be. This will hopefully improve screening.

OK, that makes more sense than just blowing up a cargo plane or even a package being delivered somewhere and blowing up there.

Well, cargo is often transported via passenger jets. Personally, I don't think the point of this particular "bomb" was to blow up at all. I think it was sent out on a fact-finding mission to see if it could get through security. Apparently this is not the first time it's been done. I wonder if this is the "threat" that Europe has been waiting for the past month or so? At any rate, now the terrorists know a little more about how to use and abuse public transportation for their own ends.

That's exactly what I heard. That's what they reported at the end of last week. I heard it on MSNBC.

Actually, if four or five cargo planes blew up over the ocean, the real effect would not be widespread terror - but it would certainly have a major imact on international trade, much of which is done by air.

(Most is done via ship - but I've been worried about a cargo container packed with explosives taking out one of those in a harbor for some time.)

Cargo that is placed on passenger planes is much more carefully screened than cargo placed on purely cargo planes. Only about 10% of cargo is placed on passenger aircraft.

The purpose is to disrupt our lives. So we think twice about opening any package we receive.
