I am getting a new car stereo for Christmas. DH said he heard that you can't mix the types of speakers. If you have Sony in front you need to have Sony in back. I think this is silly and too much money. Will it be OK to keep the front set different from the back?

Absolutely!!!!!

I work in the A/V industry, and used to actually be a buyer for car stereo equipment and accessories.

Generally, your rear speakers are just 'along for the ride' so to speak, and are just fill. Spend some money on decent front speakers, but the rears can stay as is.

It's PERFECTLY acceptable to have different brands of speaker. My last system, I had 3 different brands of speaker (front, rear and subwoofer), plus different electronic for the head unit, and amplifier.

Good Luck, and enjoy the new system!

Sure you can mix them. In fact it may be preferred. I have a mix of JBL and the factory installed Bose.

Depending on the setup the rears may have to be the stronger of the pair. Usually because there is more room to mount a bigger speaker.

The brand isn't important. Making sure the speakers are rated for the power from the amp is the important part.

Unless you are buying a separate amp, most speakers are rated for the power that built in player amps put out. A player with 4 speaker outputs should have the same type of speaker put in all four places. Same type and rating, not brand.

Most players with 4 outputs have fader options. You'll want to have the same speaker types in all four places because you never know when you'll want to fade full front or full back. The speakers will have to be able to handle the shift in power.

Just be carefull on the power ratings, You don't want to blow the speakers if you have a 100 Watt Stereo and 15 Watt Speakers.
