We're renting a car in San Diego to drive up to Anaheim. What are the car seat rules for kids in California? In PA, they are pretty stringent but we hate to lug a seat across country (in the plane) if they aren't required.

why would you NOT want your child in a car seat? I cannot imagine going ANYWHERE w/o any of my children being properly restrained. Not only does it keep them safer in case of an accident or sudden stop, it keeps them seated and out of the drivers way, making less distractions for the driver. If you do not want to lug around a car seat, just ask for one at the car rental counter. I am sure they can provide one. In fact, it may be better to let them know when you make the reservation that you will need a car seat! Have a fun and SAFE trip!!! :flower1:

Current car seat law is 6 years/60 pounds.
kids that are old enough can use a booster seat though? Both of my kids are in booster seats her in NJ and the law here is 8 years/80lbs. I was just planning on bringing the bottoms, since they are easier to pack and transport, and leaving the high backs at home. Would those be alright, I'm guessing they will since we have the most stringent law, and they're o.k. here in NJ.

You will be fine with the boosters.

Some rental companies also offer child seats, but not sure about the boosters.

Scanmom - my youngest is almost 6 yrs and almost 60 pounds, so I think I asked a very reasonable question. Now I know that a booster is the answer for this trip.

I saw boosters (the bottom part) for a really low price at KMart a while back. Seems to me they were $12. We plan on renting a carseat from the car rental place for our 2yr old and taking a booster for our 6yr old. Our oldest is a petite thing who only weighs 45lbs. Just wrap the booster seat in a garbage bag and duct tape and check it in with your luggage. It should be okay and you won't have to lug it on the plane with you. We have done that before and it came through just fine.

Good luck!
