Looking to rent a car for 4 days. Whos the cheapest? Whats a realistic price? Where do i start? Thanks

Read the Mousesavers.com info on rental cars. They have some good information!

If you are a member of BJs wholesale club, go to their website and use their travel link for rental cars. you can get a good discount code. I have used rentalcarmomma.com and got great discounts.
Getting the best price takes lots of work. I usually plug my dates into all the major rental companies with every different code I can find and try to work the best deal. And just when I think I have a great deal, I recheck all the sites (with codes) a few weeks before we leave. I almost always get an even better deal. I've also been told you can use coupon codes with the corporate codes- I've never tried it. But I'm gonna with the next rental. (example- coupons in entertainment books)

Good luck- the work is worth the discounts.

Costco has special rates as well.

awesome thanks so much for your help i am going to look into all of that!

You also might want to look over on the transportation board, there are a bunch of good codes posted.

I have had GREAT success with priceline. If my vacation is MONTHS away every day I bid on the car price I want until I get approved. It works great.

I have been using hotwire.com lately. The prices have been better than any discount codes I have found. If the rate is too high save it and you will receive an e-mail when the price drops. I got an intermediate size car for just over $200 for 10 days in December, which included all of the taxes and fees. You can get them for about $15 per day or less (I have seen $9 for a compact per day).

It has been hard for me to beat Alamo's weekly rate through Costco when I get up to 30% off and use a $30 off per week coupon. A second driver is free with them. I have paid as little as $35/week on Maui with that deal.

There are some good weekend deals through Costco as well if your four day stay includes a Saturday night.

Priceline name your price deals can also be great for short rentals. I try to avoid this since you can't get a refund if your plans change.

Taxes on rental cars are on the increase. I have paid as much as 200% more than the rental rate in taxes alone (that $35/week rate was almost $105 after taxes).

After you make a cancellable reservation, keep checking prices since they change frequently. I check daily the last week before a trip. Prices can really drop at the last minute if demand is low.
