Car rental without credit card

I'm traveling with SIL and MIL next summer. My SIL does not have a credit card (neither does MIL). My MIL wants me to put down my credit card to cover their car rental. I'm thinking that's a liability I'm not comfortable with. So, how do car rentals work without credit cards? We have to use Budget because their return flight is out of Jacksonville. Anybody have experience with that? I called Budget and they said they can put a $400 hold on a debit card. But like all things, I'm pretty sure I could call again and get a differnt answer. If it was just a $400 hold, I'd rather give her money to hold in her checking account than put my credit card down and pay an extra driver fee. KWIM?

Anybody have experience with a car rental and no credit card?

Enterprise will rent with a debit card, you have to pay a $100 deposit via debit (or cash) and the entire rental fee. You can do this with a prepaid visa card as well! I always just pay cash because I dont want them having my bank information :)

I was reading more about the subject on line. Did they run a credit check at Enterprise? Need copies of utility bills? Some of the stuff I've been reading....:upsidedow

Are you going to be the primary driver? To use your credit card, you would have to be. If they will be driving, you would have to add them as additional drivers and there will be a charge.

I don't really want to be a driver and pay the fees. I'm not comfortable using my credit card and being considered liable for the whole thing either. My MIL wanted me to add my SIL to one of our accounts to get her one of our credit cards in SIL's name.:headache:

I just called Enterprise and they don't offer one way rentals from Orlando to Jacksonville airport.

I think I just saw on the Alamo site that they take debit cards, but you had to provide proof of a round trip airline ticket. There might be more to it as well, but I did see something that included that.

Uh, is there a "thud" smiley anywhere? Your MIL wants you to WHAT???? No. Period. You may NOT do, or even attempt this. Let SIL get a secured credit card to (as is apparently the issue) build/rebuild her credit. Do NOT get her a card on any of your accounts. EVER.

We've rented with both National and Alamo... both times with a debit card. And you're right, all we had to do was show proof of a round trip airline ticket. There were no extra "holds" placed on our debit card and no hassles. Easy peasy!

We just rented with enterprise last week with a debit card.

1) they put a certain amount of money on hold on our card (I dont know how much because it was my moms card)

2) they needed our return flight information

i dont know if its the same with budget but this is what enterprise did in both virginia and in albuquerque in teh past month
